It seems that the 81 maxim xj650 I picked up awhile back which I rode for about a week before a family member left the petcock on pri and flooded gas into the engine a couple days ago which might be good, I changed the oil today and was about to start getting the carbs off when I noticed that they don't seem to be attached to anything but the boots going into the engine, is that normal or is it bad, I would think its bad, I took a few pictures of it today if someone could advise me I will figure out how to post them so they can see the issue

to post pics get photobucket or similar account and paste the IMG codes into your message. Make the pics reasonable size.

They should be attached to boots from the air box or you're getting unfiltered air into the engine.

your airbox may not be all the way forward and there should be clamps on those back boots where they attach to the carbs. Just like the carb side of the manifold boots.

    If you paste the [IMG]

Just hanging between the boots. The engine side manifolds are pretty sturdy and do a fine job of holding them up.

If you're logged in to photobucket and select a picture it gives you I think 4 choices. HTML IMG IM and I forget the last... Email maybe? atleast that's what I get.

well as much as its drooped I assume I need to change these, they are the intake manifolds right, they are all taped up, I assume they are bad and I definitely have to dive into those carbs now, haha

Upon closer insepction of your pic, that now resides in the thread, Do you have 4 boots from the air box or just the outside one? I think I see two empty holes for the middle carb boots and can't see the far side....

The engine side manifolds are taped? Then they may have been or are leaking. If you go to remove them be very careful the bolts have been known to snap off in the head.

Remove the carbs and check the condition of the manifold boots more closely for cracks. They may have been repaired where the cracks are now filled.

yea all for of the boots are there, they just are alot lower than they should be, should i hit it with some nut and bolt loosener to try to avoid breaking the head off, cause that would bum me out, i had to activate the img code on everything, don't think it existed when i made that photobucket

Leave the engine side boots alone other than loosening the clamps to get the carbs off unless you have to take them off.

The airbox side boots can be pushed back into the box to make space for carb removal.

a zip tie? lol. A valve shim tool I think it's called. Read Fitz's two write ups on the valves. He shows the proper tool, the zip tie and the copper wire methods.

Left on PRI? Check your oil see if it smells like gas. My guess is you have a crank case full of gas as well. Drain the oil put new oil in. Most likely it will never start will gas in the oil.

I didnt like the zip tie method and instead opted for a short piece of 10ga wire with a little bend at one end. Pull plug, open valve, slip wire in under the valve, and rotate the cam to remove shim. Its extremely easy and fast.
