Turn Signal cancelling stopped at same time speedo stopped

My turn Signal cancelling stopped at the same time my speedo stopped. Is this a coincedence, or are they related?

I haven't had a chance to pull the front wheel and check the speedo yet. But I recently had it off when working on the brakes.

 

Yes, they are.

There is a reed switch located in the speedo housing, above and behind the speedo. This reed switch "reacts" to the spinning magnetic cup in the speedo and lets the self-canceller know that the bike is in motion.

If your speedo stops turning, the self-canceller thinks the bike is standing still and won't cancel.

which actually helps you eliminate a few suspects off the list. specifically no auto cancel means the cable isn't spinning. Could be anything below where the cable screws onto the back of the gages but you know without even putting wrench to bike that the problem does not lie in the gages themselves.

I'd start at the top and go down for simplicity's sake. if it's a simple busted cable you can unscrew the top of the sheath from the gage and pull half the cable right out the top... don't forget to say "well THERE'S your problem"
If the entire cable comes out all the way down to the slotted end then clean it, inspect it, lube it, put it back and then go through "all the hassle" of actually opening your tool box and digging into the hub gear.

 

The entire cable shouldn't pull out from the top; the little "collar" is at the bottom end.

Which means if your speedo cable were to somehow manage to unscrew itself from the drive unit at the hub, the inner cable can simply fall out.

Don't ask me how I know this is totally possible.
