Is the motor/transmission the same from 1982-1985? Objective is to replace the bad motor in my 1982...looking for donor candidates.

BTW - You know of anyone in the NW who has a good spare xj750 motor?

    Thanks!

    Nope.

By '85 there was no XJ750 in the states. The XJs were 700s, air OR watercooled, the FZ750 was just out, with the same (watercooled) motor as the Max-X but in a 750.

Compatible years are 1981~83, for an American-market YICS 750.

Not in the states in '85, but perhaps Canada? There is a guy up there (Vancouver, BC) with a 1985 xj750 and a couple spare motors, all for sale. He confirmed it was not a 700, but a 750...and was adamant! :) Given that, I would guess it's the same motor and could be used to replace my 1982 750 motor, correct???

Given that, it's probably not an '85. Depends on when it was built, not when it was titled.

    -OR-

Since Canada wasn't under the goofy "750cc" tariff that we were here in the States, it might very well be a 1985 750cc motor.

But how exactly the same it is, compared to your earlier, USA-market 750, I can't say. Ask him for the "shorty VIN" and compare the prefixes (or look it up in chacal's VIN reference,) here: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=14577.html

@ Seattle> The 85 XJ750 (from canada) will probably have quite different mounting, the carbs are different, TCI different, 85 had a removable frame section....Not saying it wont work in an 82 but I REALLY doubt it and could be difficult. '85/86 were the only years they were made and they are quite a bit different than the older XJs...but similar.
Chacal will know more exacting differences.

@ bluemax>> THe FZ had the cylinders tilted much more forward than the X (I think 40 deg instead of the ~15 deg of the X). It also used a downdraft carb set up so the FZ engine into an X frame is probably even more difficult if not impossible than putting an '85 engine into an '82 frame.
BUT If you are just looking for a couple more cc, the jugs, pistons, connecting rods, and crank would probably fit the X...but I think it's only about 4 hp more IIRC.
You can't compare the FZ750 hp to the XJ700X hp since the downdraft carbs and forward tilt carbs combined with different tuning throw too many variables into the mix.
You would basically end up with the Canadian XJ750X version in the states.

Let's not forget the slight problem with the shifter when putting a "Seca" style engine in a 750 "Maxim" frame. Linkage length - upsidown shift pattern.

Let's see a picture of the motor??
