I'be been contemplating this a lot lately. I'm trying to figure out what would look good.

First of all, is it possible to do a good paint job without taking the engine (almost) completely apart?

I'm going for black, white, and Chrome for the bike as a whole. I was thinking about painting the engine black and polishing most the covers.

I'm going to do the usual with the valve cover, and shine up the edges of the fins. It's the covers I'm curious about. Anyone seen a black engine with polished side covers, chain cover, clutch cover, starter, and alternator covers? I'm wondering if that would be a bit of overkill with ALL the covers polished... any input?

Sounds like a cool look, not sure that I've seen anything like it before. I'm painting my XJ750 all black and polishing the top of the valve cover. Then again I'm going for the rat rod look so chrome isn't exactly what I'm looking for. Post some pics if you do it though!

Awesome. thats exactly what im looking for. Did you polish the clutch cover? Hows it look? It takes up and entire side of the engine, i wasnt sure if it would cover too much to get a good balance of black and chrome on that side.

Rudie; The big bikes have a "clutch cover insert" that's separate from the rest of the cover. It's not like the 550s, with just the 1-piece cover.

It's an "apples vs. oranges" comparison on that side.

I had a similar, yet "opposite" quandry when doing my Seca; in fact I have a blacked-out clutch cover from an FJ600 that I was going to install. But after test-fitting, I decided it was "too much" black with the rest of the engine NOT being blacked-out.

That's what I was afraid of. I wonder how Itl look if I just polished the circular part of my clutch cover. I'm not looking at it right now, if I remember it has kind of an awkward shape to it. I'll have to look at it, I'm headed home from work right now so I'm gunna be out in the garage for a while today.

you could just follow the bend line like you see there on my shifter cover and only to the center or your clutch cover.

As Fitz mentions the 750 has an inner section that I did on mine:
