I have a tiny bit of rust in my gas tank. I'm goingn to wash it out and fill it with vinager for a couple of weeks. I read that after it should be dried and sprayed with w-d 40. Will marvel mystery oil protect it from rust like the w-d 40 ? I'd rather pour the oil in and swish it around instead of spraying Thanks

Just dump a QT of cheap motor oil in, shake it around, and store indoors.

Tanks can be chemicaly or electrically de-rusted, but you commit to the whole process - - no half hearted attempts.

I'm kinda weary about motor oil. I know you can use mystery oil in your fuel and engine. Thanks for the comment.

I agree with the oil. You dont have to make sure it all gets cleaned out when your ready for gas. I would suggest slushing it around every once in awhile though

The WD40 is to drive out the remaining moisture. Not good as a preservative.

I would recommend either motor oil or "engine fogging spray" and once you're sure its 100% coated inside, seal it up.

If you're talking about putting it back in service, then de-rust it and fill it with gasoline immediately; for winter storage fill it and use Sta-Bil or some other gasoline stabilizer.

This stuff works great for mild to medium rust:

MMO will work just fine, it will rust with just WD40

in the Spring, If you drain the oil out and left 5 OZ in, then add 4 Gal, you would have about a 100:1 mix, which won't hurt anything.

Has anyone figured out exactly what MMO is??

Fill with gas add Sta-Bil, run engine to get it through out the fuel system and while it is running spray carbs through air intake with engine storage fogger to help prevent carbs from gumming up.

You weren't clear as to whether you were talking about "wintering-over" an operational bike; or removing and storing an empty fuel tank.

So what you have there is a mix of answers applicable to different situations.

LOL....MMO.....I thought the same thing TTR but then it hit me......Marvel Mystery Oil which seems to have quite a following. I always had a hard time with it because it claims to do everything and I'm skeptical of products like that. eg, I know what motor oil is, Stabil is, 2cycle oil etc......but MMO....not so much.
