I'm looking at a fairly picked apart 1984 XJ600. It has a 600cc 4-cylinder DOHC engine. Are these engines the same as the later 92' and up model? Or are there any other bikes that have the same engine? I need the stator (generator) and cover. And a second cover that goes right above that. I can only find stators and covers for the 90's models it seems. It's a great deal and I really like the bike but I'm concerned I'll get it and have to end up buying a parts bike to fix it or using it for one.

    Thanks

Edit: Do all the bikes made come with a 6 speed? I thought the guy said it was a 5 speed, could that mean it's not even the stock engine?

The 600's are all six speed. They are not the same as the later 600 diversion engine - although the later engine is similar.

Be careful with the stators. Until 1989 the alternators used a "Field excided" rotor - i.e. had carbon brushes but from 1989 onwards the rotor was a permanent magnet. They are not interchangeable!!

I believe the xj550 engine and 600 are interchangeable so a 550 motor could be a source of parts. All xj550s use the earlier type alternator.
