Any of you turbo gurus out there know what the 82 turbo factory colors were? I see a lot of pictures of the silver bikes with stripes, and I have seen a few blue and red but they never seem to have the striping on them.

    Thanks!

I read somewhere a few years ago that they made 8 black ones. One recently was for sale in Sebring, FL. Another black one was on this site.

I've seen them PAINTED red- not factory. And in the ads in 1982, the bike appears a dark gunmetal grey, but that's just lighting effects(I believe)

    Show us what you've seen.

Here is a pic of the bile I am picking up this weekend. Current owner (not original owner), does not know if the bike as ever has a re-spray. I have seen body parts for sale on eBay in blue and red.

Red would be a first for me in my travels and research. I had heard the legend about the "less than a dozen" black ones but have never been able to confirm it through anyone in Japan.

    Welcome slowboat!!

Thanks for the input guys. Looks like a paint job will be in order on down the road to bringing this baby back to life.

    HeySloboat....

Where are you located? A recent member sent me pictures of HIS red turbo to my email address. Maybe he sold it to you???No, I went back and looked at his pics and his has a translucent white "turbo" decal on the side of the fairing.

    Well, there's 2 red ones<LOL>

I have heard of the Black Turbo myth also, and have seen black in two different advertising photos (from the period)...wish I could remember where I seen them. Actually it was more like a charcoal grey than a pure black, but definitely not the silver we are used to seeing.

I also know that the non turbo 650(UK/Seca) model came in four different colors in the UK. Red, black, blue, and silver, but I don't believe they got the striping that we got here in N.A.

And that looks an awful lot like the Canadian 650R color. If it's not factory I would guess that it's been sprayed with the Canadian red.

I know it doesn't help with your question, just some food for thought.

    Nope, it's a "morphobike."

It's supposed to be a Q-shopped 650 Turbo, and in some scenes, it is.

But when it gets laid down and slid under a truck, run DOWNstairs (not up) and makes "big air" jumps, it magically transforms into a dirt bike with the same goofy bodywork hung all over it. (We're not supposed to be able to tell the difference.)

Jeff, I am in north Alabama, Huntsville area. The bike has an extra reflector on the rear flank that oilheadrons's does not. We are thinking it is maybe a Candian spec bike. We will know more once we can get it home and take a closer look. Will keep everyone informed of the progress.

That looks like a stick-on trailer reflector. I put those on the FRONT of my seca to pass inspection, and later bought the proper ones.

Likely the specs are similar in Canada, but in the US it's yellow side reflectors in front, and red in back. Notice that the taillight itself has red reflectors on the side, but does not have a centerline reflector, which is why one is installed as part of the license plate bracket.

I think the PO just slapped that on...

Damn old man, right on the money again!! Your memory's doing just fine! I watched the movie again about a month or so ago and just like the esteemed Fitz says.....it starts out as a turbo and turns into a moto/dirt bike....with big KNOBBY tires!! Actually, that happens a lot in the movies.....my ATF (all time fav) is when you see a v twin on the screen but your ears hear a 4 cyl!

In revenge of the nerds, it sounds the other way around! XJ550 sounds like a harley pulling away, but really quiet idling.

Brought the turbo home yesterday. We found evidence that it is in fact originally silver just like any of the others that you see. It does look really nice in this color though and the paint job is actually pretty good. Who ever did it was pretty good and they even painted both sides of the body work. I tried to post a picture by it must bee too large.

I have a red turbo, i'm not sure if mine is original or not, but the document history seems to indicate that it was red. I've yet to start on mine as i've been doing my gl1100 which is a pain in the arse!!

Sloboat....this was dead wrong...."Here is a pic of the bile I am picking up this weekend." !!

That bike looks pretty nice!! Even the tailight gasket still looks good. I've been searching for a NOS one for 6 months....

Hard to tell too much from the 10' pics but the seat and windshield both look good too.

I took mine out for a nice 50 miles or so ride on Saturday. I hadn't had a chance to really ride it much other then little short burst just to keep it breathing. I remembered why I like it so much the first time I grabbed a mittfull of throttle. It's been officially a year sinceI bought it and 10-1/2months since I finished rebuilding/restoring it and there's no question that 18psi is a blast to ride!!

I'm looking forward to hearing more about that nice looking red bike.....you did well, very well!!

I hate Sloboat now (that's my tow vehicle in the background). His is way more complete than mine was. And he has a clean title. I was hoping he would back out, but nooooooo....

Thanks Jeff. Actually the bile was a fat finger syndrome error. The K and L are right next to each other on the key board. The seat is not as nice as it looks. It has a small tear on the right side and the typical tearing/splitting in the back where it tapers up. See attached photos. Otherwise it is ALL there including a shroud around the oil cooler that Ron is completely jealous over.

LOL....Ron, since you had the bike on YOUR trailer....you should have just kept going..... That way you could have REMOVED the little bracket/shroud that surrounds the oil cooler. It really is THEE finishing touch and as is so often true, the details make the whole bike....it sure makes MY bike look so nice.......LOL

Still a nice bike and it won't take much to get it right....at least not much compared to some I have done.

Those tears are both on seams. You can either take it to the local upholstery shop or get someone to help you and sew them yourself with 8lb clear filliment wide-stitched for strength then black to match the existing. The help is to hold the fabric together for you while you sew. Of course you'll need to roll the cover off to do it right.

One thing it took a while to get through my head was the fact that unfortunately, these are not collector bikes so there isn't too much point in trying to keep everything "factory" other then the fun of trying to keep it original but I'd recomend against forking over huge handfuls of cash to that end.....it just won't ever pay off.

They are fun bikes though......and it's pretty cool that you guys hang out and can help each other .....

Thanks for the input Jeff. I got the body work stripped off tonight and the carbs off. Cylinders will get a good soak until Saturday, then we will try to turn the engine by hand. Carbs will get disassembled tomorrow night and ready for the cleaning tank on Saturday. We will test the fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator then to. Fuel tank will need a good cleaning as there is quite a bit of rust down there. If all goes well and I can get a bunch of cleaning done to the frame and what not then maybe we can do a test fire in a couple of weeks. I'll post pictures of the tear down once I get them downloaded from the iPhone.

Good luck... can you post up your information around what you do with the carbs.. it looks like the needs to be a vacume to open the fuel valve, i thinks that is what is wrong with mine... from memory

This red may not be a stock color, but I'm really liking it right now. Couple of pics after buffing the body parts out. If the rest of the bike has as much life left in it as this paint does I'm going to be very happy.

Got the carbs and collector back on yesterday. Have bought pickup coil assembly from ebay to hopefully resolve a firing issue for the coil that fires # 2 and 3 coil.

Thanks Jeff! Now if we can just solve the missing spark on the coil for #2 @ 3 cylinders we will be making some progress. We believe the problem is with the pickup for that coil. I have a pickup coil assembly on the way.

    There's a test procedure for that.....you can find it in the link here;
    http://www.jetav8r.com/Vision/IgnitionFAQ.html

I seem to remember that you hook an ohm meter and look for the value across each pickup coil. You want something like 95-110 range but check the link. I think that I did the testing through the connector near the TCI, not directly at the pickups. Be warned, any muffs will result in frying the TCI so disconnect it first.

Another thing to look for in the link, if you lose one side of the the TCI, you will lose one of the coils.....sounds like you may have a bad track in the TCI.

Once you read the stuff at the link, this will all make sense to you.

Short of having the above test procedure we hooked Ron's good TCI up to my bike with no change in result. So right now it is looking like bad pick up coil even though they tested out fine??? Puzzling to say the least.

Replaced pickups today and now have spark on all 4! Moving closer to a fire up. Just need a fuel pump. Guess I'll start looking for a pump from an R6.

Cool, glad you got the spark sorted. Don't be surprised or worried when you find that the R6 pumps are built to be submersible pumps mounted on the inside of the R6 tank. No worries, it's actually cooled by the fuel running THROUGH the pump, not the fuel SURROUNDING the pump. Buy one on fleabay, modify your existing mount, and hook it up....again, I recommend buying a 30 buck 12volt solinoid and tying it in to the fuel pump so its only open when the pump is running, to prevent fuel from leaking past the check valve and into the bottom end but that's your call.

    Good work!!

Thanks Jeff! I was looking at pumps last night on fleabay and noticed that some of the R6 pumps have a plastic casing and others appear to be metal. What is the difference and which should I try to get?

I don't know about the plastic ones.....I think mine came from a 02-04 but I can't be sure since it was so long ago....uh oh, check this out....I went to my fleabay account and pulled up archived purchases from 2010....here you go:
99-02 Yamaha R6 R 6 fuel pump !!!Guess the memory is beginning to fail<LOL>

How cool is that? I guess it's because TAXES on internet purchases and sales are on thier way.

Anyway, I'd be afraid of plastic housings in a exposed installation. It probably wouldn't matter if there was a metal gas tank surrounding the pump but in our installations, that isn't happening.

The R6 made the transition from carbs (which also had a fuel pump, if I remember right) to fuel injection somewhere along then. Will either pump work?? Surely they aren't the same (don't have time to check right at the moment)?

Edit: The R6 apparently went to fuel injection in 2003, but I was thinking that somebody on here had used an '04 R6 pump successfully as well. Maybe they'll both work.
