    I'd like to increase the range on my '82 XJ1100...maybe with a larger tank. The current one is something over 5 gallons.
    I don't want to hack something on there, but I'm not afraid to fabricate something that looks and fits good...so I'm wondering if anyone else has installed a bigger tank off a different year, make, or model on one of these? If so how did it go and what changes did you have to make? Pics??
    I've given a tiny bit of thought to an auxillary tank, but I don't see how that could be made to work with my bike and not take up the rack space I use when traveling...

    i know you say you use all of your rack space, but being faced with the same problem (more, if you count my meager 3 gal tank) the only feasible solution that i can think is to build a pseudo- tour tank (http://www.tourtank.com/) i was thinking a five gallon addition, in the form of a re-purposed air tank (along the lines of http://www.walmart.com/ip/Hyundai-HPT50 ... k/15054352) that way, i weld in a vented tank fill bung from lowbrow or another custom shop dealing in such products, a simple on/off valve hidden at a suitable location, and a t-joint at the carbs. all in all i am probably going to mount mine on my sissy bar, as i dont use it in my travels.... possibly you will be able to use my idea as food for thought.

    The secondary tank needs to vent into the main tank, or it could set up a siphon, draining the main into the secondary. This takes some plumbing.

    A lawnmower vacuum pulse-powered fuel pump can continuously flow fuel into the main, and the vent continuously returns fuel, until the secondary is empty, then you start using the main tank.

    Or 2 oil bottles filled with gas can be stowed for 20 miles of emergency range. Of course you won't pack them when you need them . . . :roll:

    Yup, won't feel a thing in a head-on...just a big poof! LOL

    Seriously though, there are several manufacturers of very custom tanks but it gets real expensive, real fast. I almost got a chance to take a ride up to Alaska last year and spent quite a bit of time investigating my options for carrying more fuel in addition to my topcase. Ultimately, I found this thread on one of the other forums I belong to;

    http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthre ... =fuel+cans

    take a look through the thread, there are several options but a single pancake 3.5 gal tank(added to my stock 5.8 gal) looked to be the right balance of distance vs cost & weight on my Vee.

    One thing I did learn was that if you are carrying fuel in an approved container, don't worry about the "what if someone hits me". The adv guys that ride through other countries as opposed to other states like me, told me not to ever worry about that because the tank, no matter how you've got it secured will pop off and go bouncing down the ravine or road but will NOT explode.....and if you get hit hard enough to make it explode, you won't be alive to see it ignite.

    this is a really good find, as they don't come up for sale too often.

    I guess the real factor would be to what the big tank will sell for.

    However, I'm sure you could sell the one that you have now to make up for some of the cost. quite a bit of it actually if it is in good shape. Just something to keep in mind that will make spending a few hundred dollars a little bit better.

    That other link on the adventure forus is also a good read with tons of ideas.

    Good luck and let us know how it goes and what you end up deciding to do.
