I have been looking at different wheel possibilites to get away from the swirl spoke wheels. I really like the looks of the 5 spoke wheels available on the 85-86 XJ700 N/NC/S/SC Maxim.

Running the part #'s I find that the rear is a near direct bolt in (Brake plate, Bearings, Spacers, Drive hub, Axle shaft, Final drive are all the same).

The front wheel is also a near direct bolt in (Bearings, Spacers the same) until you get to the brakes. The Brake rotors are different. I assume this is due to the larger diameter fork on the 700 offsetting the brakes slightly. 750 - 36mm, 700 - 38mm. This will also require the use of the 700 speedo drive hub.

My first question then is can the brake rotors from the 750 be bolted to the 700 wheel, or will it be neccessary to use the 700 rotors?

If the 700 rotors are required that means a complete change of the front forks to use all of the 700 brake components (Rotors, Calipers). This is all well and good until you get to the triple tree. Swapping to the 700 forks would also include some good upgrades (larger fork diameter, fork brace)

In the triple tree there are two possible options,
    1. Use the 750 triple tree and have the fork clamps reamed out to accept the larger 38mm diameter fork.
    2. Use the 700 triple tree.

If using the 700 triple tree I run into the next unknown. Steering stem height. Checking the specs on the steering stem bearings it is easy enough to determine that the 700 triple tree can be used with the 750 bearings (same ID).

My second question then is what is the height of the steering stem on the 700? Will this require shimming?

Does anyone know, or have both triple trees, or frames available to measure?
If you can get the measurement. Could you post pics of it please?

Sorry for being so long winded.
Thanx for any help you can give.

    Update!!
After spending some time on ebay getting a visual reference it is obvious that the brake rotor mounting hub on the 700 wheel is considerably larger than the 750 wheel. Using the 700 wheel will require the use of the 700 brake rotors also.

You read my mind with this swap! Many Virago 750/1100 parts just begging to be bolted up to the maxim.

You will find all the necessary info on the 700 wheel swap in my post on the virago wire wheels.
