Can anyone tell me the size of the tailpipe on my 82 xj650? I am thinking about putting on a different muffler (slip-on) Anyone done this before?? What will work and sound pretty good:) Just curious as to what size it would be if I cut off my muffler and added a slip on type. Awaiting responses.

Not sure if the 650s and 750s are the same, but I slipped a pair of Harley mufflers onto my header pipes right behind the collector box. They sound good without being overly loud. Just a nice low rumble at idle and nice mellow tone while riding.
I think some mufflers are welded onto the header pipes, so you may have to do some cutting to get your mufflers off (not sure) and slip on new ones.
Most after market mufflers are louder and don't have enough back pressure to retain the stock jetting (it will run lean) but the stock Harley mufflers are just right for adding sound and looking good without having to rejet.

Thanks. What Harley were the mufflers off of. I like the accents of red on your bike. Looks nice.
Does anyone know what size the hole would be after taking off the muffler on my bike?

Get a piece of cardboard from an old box and cut a slot in it slightly smaller than your pipe. Cut tiny bits from the cardboard until it slides over the pipe.

Measure gap in cardboard with ruler.

    Vernier calipers are easier though.

I bleieve your exhaust headers are 1-3/4" outside diameter if I remember right. I'mnot sure what Harley model/year those mufflers on mine are off of. I bought them at a swap meet three years ago.
There are several pair of stock Harley mufflers for sale on Ebay for a reasonable price if your interested. You'll want to look for a pair the does not have the cross-over hole in the side of them.

I went down to my local Harley Davidson dealership. I got lucky and buddied up to one of the salesmen and he sold me a mint set for 60 bucks...brackets and all. They hadnt even left the dealership, the bike's pipes were swapped for aftermarket when purchased.

    Santos,
Good find! When I asked about mufflers at the Harley dealer next door, they said when they install aftermarket pipes on a new bike, they send the stock system back to the factory to be reused.

Don't forget to search Ebay and Craigslist for "take offs" -- you can usually find lots of stock Harley parts that way -- bits people "upgraded".
