    Hello All

I am thinking about a set of new Keihin 33mm cv carbs.
I have been battling the original ones that are old and a pain in the butt.
I have had them off like 8 times and don't want to deal with them anymore.

    What do you think?
    Have you used them?

    Thanks

I don't have an 1100, nor do I know anything about Keihin carbs. What I can tell you is that I've been where you are; I did battle with the Mikunis on my X for what seemed like forever. Perseverance paid off, however, and finally I hath slain the jabberwock.

What's the problem you're having? Or have you posted it elsewhere and I missed it?

Personally have not used them but I have read about the installation.
You can put them on but you will have to take some time to tune them prorerly. Its not a install and ride option, you will have to install and remove them many times to get the jetting right.
With all that work why not fix the original Mikuni carb. That carb is not outdated, they still use them today. What kind of issues are you having with them?

I too have investigated this option when I first got my XJ1100. Have spoken to several places and one place I would suggest would be Dynoman performance. They will jet according to your setup, altitude, etc and even space them accordingly for the XJ. If I remember correctly, I thought the CR31's are what they suggested for the XJ.

Little pricey, but if you plan on keeping and riding the bike for years to come, go for it.

    Hello

Yeh I am having problems with the floats. They work good until they get low and then they stick. Or they stick after sitting the winter. Gas pouring into the engine or even on the HOT pipe a few times when riding. This is not cool and even dangerous! I have replaced the needle valves and seats and installed new floats. Took forever to get the float hight correct. Did all this last spring and worked for a few months until I ran out of gas on the way to work.
Got gas put it in and then gas is leaking onto hot exhaust when riding to get off highway. Parked bike with gas evaporating as it hits pipe with a nice shhhhhh sound with every drop. I take hammer and rap on carbs and get the float to rise and seal. Until the next time it f***s up.

I even had them stick when I was beating on it and emptied bowls just by hammering on it. got down the road and gas leaking everywhere.

I have changed the oil so many times because of gas its just stupid.

I JUST DON'T WANT TO DEAL WITH THIS BS ANYMORE!

I FOUND A SET THAT ARE SOLD IN A RACK WITH THE JETS FOR MY XJ 1100
SOLD FOR THE XJ AND XF YAMAHA'S THEY CLAM IT ADDS 10% POWER AND RUNS BETTER WITH MANUAL SLIDES AND BETTER THROTTLE RESPONSE
THE ONLY ISSUE I CAN SEE IS THAT YOU NEED A TWO CABLE SYSTEM THAT NEEDS TO INSTALLED. EVERYTHING TOGETHER WOULD BE 900 BUCKS.

    ???????????

900$ is a little steep, if your pockets are deep then go for it. Not within my budget, I would fix the carbs. Hanging floats are a common problem usually from bent float pins or floats. I have had similar problems with gas tanks that have been lined with sealer. The sealer comes off and makes a sticky glue inside the carbs.
I'm cleaning a CB900 tank right now that left my friend stranded for the same reason.

your floats are going down too far, once the tang that works the needle up and down gets past 45 degrees it jams because it's pushing the needle sideways.
there should be something adjustable on the floats to stop them from going down that far

Its worth a shot. I might just take them to someone and have them checked and set by someone that does them.

    >ding ding ding ding< We have a winner! That was my problem precisely.

There is. Pull up the Mikuni carb cleaning writeup off the XJ4Ever site -- I took the existing writeup from the XJCD and added pictures. On page 18, I point out the little tang that bumps up against the pillar to stop the floats from lowering beyond a certain point.

(Actually, I think I need to update that file a bit. I don't use a toothpick to set the floats anymore.)

Yes the original ones do have a tab. The set I got does not have the tab!
I replaced the original ones with after-market ones.
I did keep the original ones! But they are not strait anymore.

??????????????? I will look into it. I also have a pilot jet that needs to be taken out by a machine shop.

Well. We might be onto something here.

Just for gits and shiggles, drop a note to Chacal and see what he's got onhand. That little tab comes in *real* handy. :)
