    Hi Guys,

I have an XJ650 Maxim and the High Beam instrument light (the blue light), in between the clocks, isn't working. I have tried new bulbs to no avail and also put a tester into where the bulb should go, which isn't lighting up. Any ideas? Thanks in advance :)

    Hi,
I'd take the tester and check all the harness plugs which include the wire to the high beam for voltage when the switch is switched to high beam(taking for granted the switch is switching to high beam and you have a wiring diagram also). If you can isolate the spot the voltage stops then its easier.

Then, basically, pull the wire while holding the plug or connection and see if it is corroded away inside of the plastic insulation. If it feels stretchy then the wire is broken inside... keep pulling and, "snap", the plastic will break and now you know where to fix the harness.

Beware, you may need to fix a whole bunch of wires once you get started as its a bit like popping bubblewrap and hard to stop at one. I normally have a soldering iron heated up, heatshrink, heatgun, some replacement wire and crimps ready when i start this exercise.

In saying that you could just have corroded connections in a connection block. Or you could have that aswell as broken wires... I know I had both.

These things have had a lot of years in the weather so, if yours is like mine, the harness requires a bit of top to bottom service.

+1. It's wiring somewhere, that's all it can be.

    Update

Just again to say thanks for the replies. It was a wiring problem and it was really my fault. Turns out the bridging wire running from the headlamp (2 yellow cables), to the speedo clock was missing. I had previously cut it away while sorting things out, thinking it wasn't doing anything, as it was really messy behind the headlight many months back. Silly mistake, costing lots of time! :)
