So, the Vetter fairing brackets for my 1982 XJ750 seem to be hard to find. Would a bracket for a XJ650 frame work? I'm not sure how much the frame sizes differ between the 650 and 750 - if the 650 is small I could widen it if all the other parts would then match up like they are supposed to...
How difficult would it be to make my own? It doesn't look to be that complex of a part.

I would think the mounts from a XJ650 would fit - you can interchange the engines between the frames.

The Vetter mounts are all the same at the horizontal member where the mount bolts to the fairing (but you need to get the same type fairing - i.e., Windjammer or Quicksilver) - the difference is in the other semi-circular tabs (for clamps) and bars (for bolts) that fasten it to the bike's frame. You could try your hand at fabing up your own (the Vetter site shows several that have). The key is that the windshield angle should match the front fork angle. If you have some welding skills you could also try getting a mount for a different bike and welding on the appropriate XJ bike frame mounts.

I took the 650 bracket off ebay. It sure looks like it would match up - at most I might have to move the bottom mounts to fit the frame. Maybe I won't have to :)

I wouldn't be messing around with this stuff if it wasn't for Metal Bob.

I had to make my own brackets to mount a Vetter fairing on my 750 Seca years ago. I first positioned the firing where I wanted it (propped up with wood blocks and rags to keep from scratching the bike)
Then I took measurements and fabricated the brackets, using 1" angle iron for the fairing to sit on and bolot to. The down braces were made out of 3/8" round stock, welded to pices of tubing (used to wrap around the frame tubes on the bike) I used 4 stainless hose clamps to hold the tubes to the frame, and a couple bolts screwed directly to the frame holes just under the fork bearings (there are two holes in the frame, so I used them)

It ended up being good and solid. I've since removed the fairing and sold it, but it served it purpose well.

Ha Ha...You're the guy that took that off of ebay! I had been watching/talking to them (Jack's) for weeks....I called on Thursday to actually buy it...BAM, the guy tells me it just sold....My loss, well, I guess I can take solace in the fact that another member got it...good for you.

My understanding is the 650 and 750 frames are identical (or pretty darn close), so it should be a direct fit.

Not sure where you're at with the other stuff, but I found a guy...semi-local to me (Sheboygan WI) who has some OE Vetter install kits (it's the complete package..from wiring harness to zip-ties, even has original '82 XJ750 instructions) ..he also had a brand new (emphasis on had) '82 XJ750 bracket...so I'm good...all's well that ends well!

Please document your installation...or stay in touch with me...cause I'm going to be doing the install when the weather breaks around here.

If you'd like, I could take some pix of mine and also give you the measurements.

That's a lol right there. Did I pay more than you were going to??? ;)

I'm not sure what all is going to come with my fairing - it hasn't arrived yet. I found a good deal on a 3 piece luggage kit with frame and the front fairing but just a little too far to drive. Supposedly a localish shipping company will be bringing it by. Unless I got fleeced that is. Craigs List is "if-y" if you're not face to face but I paid with Paypal and they seem ready and willing to side with the buyer and screw the seller whenever they can so I figured I was covered well enough.

What all is in the OE install kit?

Are you going to find a Cycle Sound piece to put on top?

Not sure who got fleeced in this deal, but I had Jack's talked down to $50 shipped for the bracket....I'd been sitting on it for about 2 months, and it hadn't sold, so I called and made the offer and he accepted...then I got cold feet (thought I could still do better), called back and he said "I thought you bought it on ebay yesterday". My jaw just about hit the ground! Jack suggested a cycle salvage here in Milwaukee (didn't have the bracket), they gave me the name of a guy in Sheboygan...called him, and I hadn't even finished asking when he cut in, "Yeah...I got one of those"...Although he wanted almost $80....I thought, "I've been looking for 3 months....and the only one I've been able to find just sold...I better jump on it".
I got up there yesterday, and the bracket was brand spanking new! Glossy paint...original stickers and all. In the box was a sealed plastic bag, with an instruction sheet (says '82 Yamaha XJ750 Maxim & Seca installation)...was also filled with a bunch of clamps n zip-ties and parts....but it also had the original headlight to fairing pigtail...I was either going to have to fab one up or get one off of ebay for $20 something....
I'll take a picture of all the parts and post it up over the weekend.

Oh Yeah, the CycleSound??? Am I going to be bidding against you on every one of those too? Yeah, I was planning on getting one, but I really don't want to pay more than $25 + whatever shipping is.

Heh, I paid $50 PLUS shipping, so... meh Cheap enough I guess.
I believe I got the pigtail with the fairing and that was the only important part I thought. Clamps and zip ties I got sitting around after all.
I think I'll be replacing the headlight with an H4 type though. Eventually I'll get around to the LED blinkers and crap.

I haven't seen a decent cyclesound for $25 or I would have it already. :)

WOW a NOS XJ750 Vetter bracket... I would have paid $80 also! :)

I ended up buying a full fairing with the Cycle Sound installed for $40. What a steal. Didn't 'need' the fairing but WANTED the radio shell. If memory serves, that ended up being the best condition windjammer I bought :) - I think I have 4 total in various conditions...

Hmm, I wonder how that compares to the classic h4. It should at least be better than my stock XJ light I'd bet.

Good price H4 replacment KIT. Not quite HELLA but they are OEM brand headlight lens/reflectors. Offer extra bulb in the "best offer" with the guy, he said yes for me :)

These are what I use inside my Windjammer (IV, SS, V style signal/reflector):

The LED flasher I'm using with 100% LEDs: (No autocancel)

Not cheap but my rear DOT turn signals are:
K & S Led turn signal #25-9900D (I got it cheaper on ebay but don't expect a repeat of my luck)

(FYI: They come in matte-ish plastic black, black carbon fiber color, and chromed plastic -- I spray painted mine gloss black over plastic black).

Somewhere around here is the thread about how to have LED blinkers and keep your autocancel. I think my soldering skills are good enough for that...

So, just to follow up, the 650 bracket does not fit perfectly on the 750 frame. The lower tabs will have to be moved slightly to line up. So I guess while I'm doing that I'll clean up all the welds on the bracket - none of them are all that and a bag of chips.

    They don't fit?
It was my understanding the two frames (and hence the bracket) were identical?!
FYI Dave, mine went on pretty easy once I figured out how to get that triangular piece in there....it slides in (and around) from the top, not from the bottom or sides.
I've had it on for about two - three weeks....I love it! Now I need to find some cheap lowers!

I thought they were the same too - however I now see that the backing piece does look different between the XJ650 and XJ750 directions. Are you sure the mount is for the XJ650 and not the XS650? The XS650 should have 4 curved metal clamping pads where the XJ650 has 2 lowers and the upper bar.

Yeah, that's the XJ all right. The lower tabs just do not match up correctly. Maybe I just have a bad example, or someone has already mucked around with it.

They SHOULD line up correctly. The mount for the 750 and the 650 are the same. If your's isn't lining up right, something's not right.

I didn't have any trouble with mine...............

FYI, the installation kit should consist of: the pig-tail, reflectors on ring-clamps for the forks, nuts/ washers/bolts for the fairing-to-mount holes, 4 ring clamps to hold mount to down-tubes, triangle filler to go inside frame above horn, two long bolts that go through everything, drawstring bag to tuck the wires into, instructions.
