1982 Turbo Seca Bobber, tank and turbo question.

    I'm Bobbing out an 82 turbo Seca I got for free I'm tearing it altar and rebuliding it as a hardtail. I was seeing of anyone knows of a gas tank that would fit the turbine Seca frame. The original was under the fairings and .....not the tank for a Bobber. Also could I remove the turbo and still be able to run the bike? I know I'd have to make up an exhaust but I m not looking for a fast bike and I don't see the need for it. I'll try to post some pics but any help I woulr greatly appreciate it.

    well b4 u tear it apart. would u be interested in a xj650 to bob out?

    The mounts are exactly the same for the 650-750 Maxim and Seca tanks, and there's a short list of "will-fit" tanks from other brands.

    BUT - the 650 TURBO motor, without it's turbo will feel like a soggy old 500 once you get a set of carbs dialed-in for it.

    The factory carbs were set-up for "on-boost" performance, and were even jetted different between the inner 2 and outer 2.

    Thanks for the reply, well its been out in the elements for about 3 or 4 years. It did turn over before I started the tear down. The clutch cover was off I'm guessing that's why it was left for dead so ill rebuild it. So my decision on taking out the turbo was based on the exhaust under the 650 was rusted bad. So it can run with a bit of adjusting to the carbs?

    This is my first project so forgive me for the minnimal information but after reading so many posts people on here are so willing to help each other out and there are some amazing bikes in here as well. As soon as I can post pics I will. And thanks again for the replies.

    The turbo seca is a complicated bike, you don't see many hacked up because all of the parts of the intake-engine-exhaust work together as a "system" delicately balanced to make a carbuerated inline-four WORK with a turbo charger. People do mod them, but usually only to update one piece of the system or another, most don't change the WHOLE system. Removing the turbo might be a lot easier if it was fuel injected.

    Also note that one reason it'll be "soggy without the turbo" as TIME put it is because the compression ratio is lowered from 9.2 to 8.0. In addition to the carb setup, the ignition is specifically designed for the turbo as well. Not to mention the extra sensors and wiring, it's really not going to be easy to make a "simplified wiring harness" if you plan to use the TCI at all.

    Anything is possible, and I'm not trying to naysay...but honestly (and I'm really not trying to be mean here), if it's rough it's going to be expensive to fully restore, and quite difficult to re-engineer it. It'll get quite pricey even if it's decent shape (Although there is a great source for carb rebuild kits that I'd wish I found sooner). I'd consider selling it for parts (since you got it for free, you can only make a profit) and using the proceeds to by a better platform for a bobber. Stick with XJs, they are great bikes to work on, simple enough, and not all that hard to hack up, 650 maxims and 750 secas are quite plentiful. But a turbo really isn't the BEST start.

    Again, if you're really dedicated to this bike, for what ever reason, take my opinion with a grain of salt. You won't hear it from me again. But as a turbo owner (and current restorer...I'm actually a little frustrated with my project at the moment, fwiw) I think it needs to said.

    I must add that I still have my burnt, salvaged TURBO, after insurance claim, saved for a possible trail bike, or whatever.
    I've thought about what exactly to do with this 2,400 mile motor . . .
