I have a 1985 FJ600. This is the same as the early XJ600. My bike had just about everything when I bought it.. except a windshield. I even have the rubber windshield gasket.

Anyway, I plan to cut my own windshield and I could probably approximate it from the curve in the fairing, but it would be way cleaner if I simply had a traced paper template from an actual windshield. I was wondering if someone with an early FJ/XJ 600 could trace the outline of their windshield for me. You don't have to remove it. Just place the paper flat on the plastic and trace the edge where it meets the gasket. I don't even need the top edge, just the sides and bottom. Then fold it up and snail mail it to me. I would be happy to pay postage. Thanks for anyone's help. It seemed like most of the forums are for Seca/Maxim owners, so I posted this inquiry here.

I don't know if this helps but, the windshield on the FJ600 has the same part number as the windshield on the early XJ900, the 853cc version, and is number 31A2838102.
Unfortunately no longer available new from Yamaha, but could help you source one from the other bike.
    Hope this helps.

A new screen with a flip top is available from "Wemoto" in the UK - (they do ship abroad) for £40 = approx $60

You're in the right forum; it's just that there aren't that many FJ600s running around. (I'm jealous.)

Plus we're all so helpful, we all just want to help you find a replacement. Which can be easily done, and THESE FOLKS will even cut one to a custom height for you: http://www.bikescreen.com/

Consider that a replacement from FSG is probably not going to be much more than buying a hunk of quality plex and doing it yourself, unless you have a source.

I know where there's an 85 FJ600 for $500. Needs new windshield, sprocket and chain, blinker, and probably a couple other parts.

Trying to make a windshield from the proper thickness of plexi, or lexan will be a major pain. Unless you have a form for the right contour. You will not be able to get the shape correct once the material is heated for forming.

Using to thin of material will lead to the windshield not being able to hold up to the pressure of the wind against it while riding. This could lead to unstable handling, and possible damage to the fairing from the flexing, and vibrations.

You are better off just getting a new windshield from Gustafsson's Plastics. Made to fit properly, and your choice of 15 colors. Decently priced.

The XJ600 does not use the same windshield as the FJ600. Only the XJ900 is the same.

I know I can buy a windshield and I appreciate all of the suggestions for parts sources, but I like to do my own fabricating, if possible. Luckily, the FJ shield does not have any complex curves. Also, I have a wholesale source for pretty cheap plexi. Thanks for all the comments. Fitz, it is weird that there aren't many FJ600's around, at least not in the US. Maybe not to many were sold here, but I don't have any numbers. It seems that there were/are alot of XJ600's in Europe and they are identical to the FJ, near as I can tell. Maybe American buyers didn't like the bike at the time. I like it just fine and the price was very right.

Why can't GB1 scan the traced paper with a measured rule (lines) and e-mail it, then profdave print it out and check the rule?? Save a few days??

plexiglass is way to brittle and scratches too easy, you need to use lexan......

Lexan is what I am using. I have a pretty reasonable wholesale manufacturer that is local.
