so finally got her started and running. took the carbs apart this morning cleaned and put em back in. so all excited i finally got her runnin........ <kkkkkrrrrrrruuuuuuunnnncccchhhhhhhhh> tried taking off and sounds like my gears are toast. just an enormous gear grinding in 1st and second gear takeoff. and seeing that it happens in 1st and sec, could there be a possibility the shaft gear is the culprit? any history of this prob with these bikes and if so......... how much is this gonna cost me?

 

Check your clutch cable free play and engagement is correct. The clutch cable has to be reconnected after gettingt the carbs back in, maybe this is not set quite right for you at the moment.

 

never took it off to get the carbs off, could that still be the issue? she wouldnt engage until i released the clutch but soon as she did gears grind.

 

My first thought is bad clutch plates. I could be and probably am wrong. Hey xjrider you should put your bike stats in your signature to help out with what your riding.

 

Put it in Neutral.
Pull the Plugs.
Remove the Left Crank Cover.
Spin the Plant by Hand.

Perform the same test with the Bike in Gear.
Listen, ... feel, ... locate if possible.

Attach LARGE Vise Grips to Throw-Out Lever.
Have assistant Throw Clutches completely out.
Jack engine.
See what results.

Adjust the clutch (second link in RickoMatics signature). If you still are not engaging smoothly then you most likely have clutch plates stuck together from sitting.

If it is a 550, check the chain and sprockets to make sure the chain is properly lubed and adjusted and the sprockets aren't worn out. This will cause the sound you describe.

 

Yeah I was going to say, how about we slow down, back up, and find out what bike we're talking about first.

Then we'll need to know the mileage, some history, etc.

We have almost nothing to go on at this point.

ok sorry, been looking for a car... so its an 82 xj1100 with 10k original miles, one owner garage kept until a yr and a half ago. was sitting outside under a carport until i saved her from death. bike was well maintained, everyfuse was original and looked brand new. some contactors need to be cleaned carbs were gummed up to all shit and one of the main jets were split in half.....!!?? wtf to that... so all in all she isnt really a bad bike just got neglected the past cpl yrs. and like i said i think it has the 1st/2nd issuemaybe....... i opened theoil filler and engaged the clutch and she seems to slide fine, any thoughts or do i need to open her belly up and do some grinding?

 

It most likely is the 1st/2nd gear issue. My son just fixed that problem on his 81 XS1100. It took him about a day and a half. Here is a post in XS11.com on how to fix it without pulling the motor and splitting the case. He tried to do the repair without flipping the bike he could not get the gears to go back in, once he decided to flip it the gears almost fell together.
