I just got the bike, and it seems that the threading for the mirrors is not the same on both sides., Is this correct?

That is Correct. Yamaha uses left handed threads on their right mirror, so if you bump it in a fall or against something, the mirror loosens instead of tightening and possibly snapping off.

Most other Japanese manufacturers don't do this, so when you buy mirrors, you need to look for Yamaha specific ones.

Look at the nut on the bottom of the stem-should be scored- that
    indicates left hand threading.

I figured that out after snapping off the mirror  :!:

Thanks. I knew something was different from my Honda. Just got a set of great OEM mirrors on Ebay for $29. Some guy was parting out an 85 xj700.
