Well I am moving to Ireland for at least three months or so, but I am selling all my crap and pretending like it is long-term. (sort of like Columbus burning the ships or whoever that was). I may end up staying for a year or so, we shall see how things turn out!

Obviously I want to have a bike over there, but was wondering if any Euros on board know of Irish laws for cc restrictions or whatnot.

Also if anyone has any riding tips, or a primer on "How to ride in Europe and not act like a rude North American" would be appreciated. I will be travelling on a EU passport, so the borders should be OK, but right now I am unsure of ferries, chunnels, and the like, since I have to cross two bodies of water to get to Europe mainland.

I don't leave for a month, but will keep people updated with what I find if there is any interest.

    Cheers!
    Spiney/Terry

I was stationed in Germany for 4 years and didn't find it all that much different than driving here in the states. The only time I really got messed up was when I took a trip to England. The whole wrong side of the road threw me for a day or so. The plus though was I could read all the signs :D

Since you already have a Canadian motorcycle license, you don't have any restrictions as to engine size. Insurance rates for bigger bikes may influence you choice of bike, however.

From what my friends who've ridden in the UK say, things in general are more bike-friendly than stateside. There's more bike parking, in some cities bikes have access to areas where cages are restricted, etc.

Vehicle insurance is kinda spendy, and public transport across/under the waves is accustomed to safely transportong bikes. The roads tend to be narrow.

You'll learn to love roundabouts.

Where in Ireland will you be?.

Thanks for the replies. For the first two months I will be in Castlebar, Co Mayo. And then possibly in Kilkenny for a month. That still is not for sure though.

Have fun ,and since you'll be in the neighborhood, you really should take the ferry to the Isle of Man in early June.

It's the 100th anniversary of the IOM TT, so you won't get a second chance.

Hmm, I forgot about that. I do know people that live on the isle, perhaps I should (ahem) invite myself to a stay?
