    First a little background:
I bought a nonrunning 700 Maxim X. Previous owner said it ran good but hadn't been run in a year and a half. I pulled the carbs and they were full of gunk. While cleaning the carbs I noticed the main jets are 100's. According to the manual they should be 105's. He also gave me a second set of carbs; they have 107.5's. All the other jets in both carbs are correct.

I figure the set of carbs that have the 107.5's probably had the exhaust modified or maybe different air cleaners. As far as the set with the 100's; I can't imagine a good reason for going 5 sizes smaller. The air cooled 700 Maxim used 100's but their other jets were also different so I don't think the carbs came off a standard 700.

    Now my question:

Should I use the 107.5 jets or should I order some 105's like the factory used? I don't feel good about using the 100's even though the previous owner said it ran good. It seems like the factory set things up lean so going up one size should be fine but what about going up 2.5 sizes?
By the way, I'm using stock air cleaner and exhaust.

Sorry this is so long but I wanted to give you as much information as possible.
    Thanks in advance.

    Update:
While examing the second set of carbs I notice they had different rods and were numbered 5Fz82. That checcks out to be the correct factory rods. What that means is the carbs that were on the bike had aftermarket rods since they were different and had no numbers. Now that explains why it had 100 jets. The rods have 6 groves for different hanging height and is smaller in diameter. Anybody know what this rods is and if so do you have information on it?

    Thanks,
    Ron

Think the 'rods' you are referring to are the jet needles, they go into the needle jet (no, that's not a misprint) vacuum pulls the needles out of the needle jet allowing fuel to enter the system.

OK, maybe I wasn't clear when I said "Anybody know what this rods is and if so do you have information on it?" I wasn't refering to its function or what it is.
What I want to know is what brand is it. Do you know of an aftermarket "JET NEEDLE" that has six adjustment levels and has no identification numbers and will go into a 700 Maxim X carb.
I imagine there is/was a popular recalibration kit for these bikes.

    Thanks,
    Ron
