I have an oil leak between the head/block at the back of the motor. I don’t feel confident in pulling the head and dealing with the cam chain.
Intially my plan is to retorque the head bolts and add some stop leak to see if that helps. Can I try some oil stop leak addititive or would that cause problems with the clutch or something else? I noticed a bit of oil leaking down the cooling fins and a whiff of smoke coming up from under the carbs.

I'll bet it's the cam chain tensioner body-to-cylinder gasket that's leaking, and the oil is "migrating" and fooling you. It will make you think you have a base gasket leak; it did it to me.

DO NOT use any "oil stop leak" products. These engines are, in effect, OIL cooled. Their internal heat dissipation is dependent upon any number of little oil jets and spray nozzles inside the motor. You don't want to risk clogging something that ought not be clogged.

I'll take a closer look at it. I'm assuming the chain tensioner, body-to-cylinder gasket is at the front of the motor? I also wonder if it's the tach cable o rings and the oil is blowing back around the engine? I'll throw some engine degreaser on there, clean it up and find out if I can find the source.

Tach drive = front right top of motor.

Cam Chain tensioner = Center Back of motor above transmission.

    CAM CHAIN ADJUSTER

This is the "manual" style; you may have an automatic one but the location is the same.

If you have a manual one and wish to adjust it, this is the place where you do it but there's a prior step required (positioning the crank.)
Let me know if you want me to post that step.

Here's where she's leaking from, looks to be above the chain tensioner bolt. Am I going to have to pull the head and install a new head gasket?
