No such thing as an inertia switch in an XJ. That's a new bike or car thing, my '08 VW has one. Your bike doesn't.

Your bike employs a "safety circuit" that prevents the motor from starting in gear if the sidestand is down; but allows it to start in gear if the stand is up as long as the clutch is pulled in.

This system employs a sidestand switch, sidestand relay, neutral switch and clutch lever switch to signal the "safety relay" when to let you start the bike. If it ain't happy you get no start.

The most common failure (except for the fusebox) is the sidestand switch due to its inhospitable location. If the bike thinks the sidestand is down, nothing will work.

The fusebox is 30 years old and the fuse clips are known to crystallize and break all on their own. This could also contribute to the problem.

You need to get ahold of a manual and a meter and get to diagnosing.
