I just got home from a very disappointing trip. An older gentleman came into the liquor store I work part time at and we started talking motorcycles. He proceeds to tell me he has an old Indian Chief from 1953 that he bought new. I have always been a fan of Indians and he told me the last time he rode it was 1965 and that since I seemed to like the bikes so much he would sell it to me for $500 as long as I kept in touch with pictures of the restoration. I agreed, so I borrowed my Friends truck which is a horrible gas hog and drove an hour and a half away to go get it this morning when I get there we go and look at it in his barn and although it was covered in layer upon layer of filth all the parts were there and no real apparent damage. So I go to give him the $500 and he said he needed at least $20,000 since he could sell it for that much if he cleaned it up himself. I explained everything that needed to be done to make it road worthy and he said it always started and ran before and that it would start as soon as he tried. I asked him to try and start it and he said he didn't have to prove anything and asked me to leave...... What a waste of my morning. :?

Wow-I can understand how P.O. you must be. That '53 Chief would have been a real score for $500. As the old saying goes-If it sounds too good to be true, it's probably someone talking out of their a**. I suggest going for a spirited ride on your trusty XJ & forget the whole thing ever happened.

Sounds like someone told him how much its worth before you got there. Same thing happened to me with an old car I was looking at. A 37 Chevy Coupe for 700.00 that turned into 5000.00. I was P.O.'ed as well. Hard to forget the one that got away.

    x2. hate when that happens.

not that you or i would intentionally rip someone off but that people get greedy if they know exactly what they have.

My issue is that the bike hasn't. Run in 40 some years you can buy a new Indian fro that price and a lot of older ones too, and they. Run and drive. That bike would have cost a small fortune to get running and up to speed again. Oh well at least I know that old digger wont be riding it anytime soon. I just isn't I could have saved the gas money.

Too quick on the hook, and it pulled free before snagging a mighty motoring fish!

That was a big price jump! Worth maybe $3G's as is. You will spend much more restoring it. Sounds like a chain puller to me-he just enjoys watching the joy drain out of you.

...and if you would have stabbed him in the neck you could have watched the life drain out of him! But then you would have got in trouble and had to go to jail. Juries just don't understand how pricks like this can set a guy off. All they see is some dead jerk and you standing over the body with a bloody knife.
    Life's not fair.

Those of you that are reading my replies and are thinking, whoa, crazy guy.....nah, just playing head games with ya. I'm bored!

Actually, ... being savvy might have save you from getting took.

This is exactly the way some cons begin.
    Low-ball a guy for something.
    Get him to look.
Some "Expert" steps-in and tells a tale of riches pending.
You pop for an additional grand or two after negotiations.
They tell you to come and pick-up the bike after lunch.

    After lunch you return.
    Start loading.
    Then, ...
You some guy asks you WTF you are doing.

    You find out, ...
    You got screwed.
Wasn't them guys bike, garage, house or anything.
Just a couple of guys running a short con for your money who are now long-gone.

It'll be your word against his unless you have video survelance, so sell him his stuff, then slip an extra bottle of expensive stuff in the bag. When he goes to leave the store call 911 and report a robbery. When they pull him over it'll be interesting to see him explain why he has a receipt for a bottle of "Thunderbird" but has a bottle of expensive Bourbon in the bag too!
    Paybacks can be a bitch!

Been through it with a Yamaha Venture the guy excepted $300 then backed out when it was time to pick it up.
Ya way to much my brother picked up a 1950 Harley Davidson for $5000.00 and he thought it was a bargain. Pic below when he bought it. It is undergoing an extensive rebuild. Been working on it for two years.

He comes into the liquor store a couple of times a month, however I do think he figured I would pay more if I drove all the way there. He failed to realize I can walk away empty handed... Disappointing though it may be.

Honestly though I feel worse for the Motorcycle, just sitting there slipping away, it's really a shame....

Someone mentioned Karma, well in that case the liquor swillin, barn owner will get his one day. Like he may mention to some scruffy looking guy riding a Harley, with a funny looking patch on the back of his jacket and say "Hey, how would you like to by my old Indian Chief for $500. 00 as long as you keep in touch and let me know how the restoration goes"?

Later on, about twenty guys show up at said liquor swillin barn owners place and pulls out five bills, to which liquor man says "Nah, I'd probably need at least 20 grand".

    News at eleven:
Liquor swillin barn owner found dead with several knife wounds and multiple gun shots, barn was burned down too. The one funny thing is he had $500.00 shoved up his ass and the words "Thank you" carved in his butt cheeks.
Police have no clues at this time, but after talking to neighbours police discover the guy was a jerk!
Stay tuned for more reports in this on going investigation.
...and now over to Stu in the weather centre:
"Thanks Bill, the weather is getting nicer and more bikes are going to be out on the roads this weekend".........................
