First off, welcome to the forums! You will be shocked with the amount of information available at your fingertips on this site. Make sure you have location and bike information updated in your profile, it helps the gurus give you more accurate advice quicker. Now let's get into some of your concerns, shall we?

Our wonderful parts supplier member ID Chacal has some amazing write-ups and ALL the parts you will ever need. The quickest way to get that info is to click on that XJ4Ever banner at the top of the page.

There were absolutely models of the XJ's that were Police bikes. I can't really say much more on this topic because I honestly don't know that much.

You can get the model, year, and some other interesting information from your VIN #. Learn all about your VIN and which bike you own here: VIN's

The first and most important piece of information you can possibly own is a SERVICE MANUAL. You can find the Yamaha Shop Manuals on ebay, or you can order the XJCD (a good term to search the forums for). If you prefer differently, the Haynes manual works well - it is what I myself use. I am sure a few members have the Haynes manual in PDF format, and may be willing to email you a copy for your use.

Also be sure to make your bike SAFE before riding. I am sure there will be some gurus on here shortly to go over the full check list, but the main thing is a BRAKE inspection - front and rear. That does mean pulling the rear wheel off and checking for delamination (you can search 'delamination' in the forums and learn what to look for, etc). Also check your brake lines - look for the manufacture dates. If older than 4 years, they definitely need replaced.

Clean your CARBS - The Church Of Clean has some great information on how important this is.

Be sure to check your valve clearances too. This is a relatively easy process if you have some patience and a few basic tools and will make sure you get to ENJOY your new bike instead of scratching your head wondering why it won't GO.

I know there is a lot of stuff I am missing, but this should at least get you started. As always welcome to the forums, be SAFE and have FUN, and don't be afraid to ask questions!

    -John
