I am a newbie rider and would like to add a small windshield that will force the air at least up off of my chest (over the helmet would be better). I own a 1983 Yamaha Maxim 750 with the old cast square handlebars and square headlight. I think the Cobra would do better than the Spitfire since it is both an inch taller and, I believe 2 inches wider. I realize I will have to order the special mirror adapters to make the windshield work, but would appreciate any advice or suggestions otherwise. My situation is I am 5' 11" and will be riding mostly city up in the twin ports of Superior, WI and Duluth, MN where it stays cool and wet. The Hellfire SS-24 is the only other windshield I can imagine using, but have never rode with a windshield so I am new to the whole experience. Comments and suggestions would help me very much. Thank you.

FYI: 1982 XJ750 Maxims were sold NEW well into 84-85 I believe and/or may have been mis-titled over the years.

83 750 Maxims should NOT have square headlight, square handlbar or Retangular Atari gauge panel.

Check the vin number on the neck/engine.

Sorry can't help with the fairing question.

I picked up an SS-28 Sport fairing, and found that even set as high as possible it just shoved the air at my helmet creating a lot of turbulence.

I'm also 5'11". Not a fun ride, but maybe you'll have better luck since I tried with an 81 XJ650 Maxim. Maybe it just turns out I'm not a fairing type of guy, it was the first time I used one in 30 years of riding.

Metal_Bob thanks for the info, I will check out the
VIN tomorrow to verify the year. It is possible it is
a different year than I was told, which would explain
ordeal I have pricing aftermarket products such as the
    windshield.

The CalSci windshield people have a handy guide to getting the windshield height proper for YOU. CalSci link
Most people prefer to ride looking over the windshield; most experience reduced turbulence when using a diverting wing either at the base or top of the windshield to add calm air to the backside of the windshield. Wider may not be better depending on design (look at new V-Stream design by National).
