could be the cable itself. My tach tip popped off and it still works but sometimes the cable spins on the tip. Mine is also very jittery now as well.

The needle itself shouldnt be sticking on anything. Open the gauge up, remove the gauge face, and check the Coil spring attached to the spindle that drives the needle as well. It may be loose and need resoldered. Happened to the used gauges I recently purchased. Also, some of the gauges have tiny grooves in the drive spindle and outer mount point through which the spring slides in to retain it. Check the cable tips on both mounting points(engine & tach) and make sure it twists freely. Check your grounds and positive resistance.

The XJ750J (assuming thats the bike you are discusing) does not use a cable for the tach. It works of the coil to cylenders 2 & 3 (the gray wire) My first XJ750J had a short in the tach and 2 & 3 would not fire.

Clean all the connections and you may need take apart the tach and clean it. I believe that someone on this site rebuilds the tach and does a pretty good job. Mabey they will chime in to help you out.

You don't NEED the oil seals unless you have a mechanical tach; and I believe yours is electronic...

It's possible that it just needs to be cleaned (I see spiders in some that I have taken apart). If you venture to take the tach apart (cover off) look for solders that are broken and clean with the electronics spray cleaner. Under the left side cover where the TCI is, disconnect the electrical connections and clean with an electronics spray cleaner and use some dialectic grease to help protect the connections.

I'm not an electrician so I would not know what else to look for in them other than what is obvious.

    DON'T.

Take the cluster apart carefully; apply a drop of lube to the obvious pivot for the needle shaft on the back of the instrument itself.

Go spraying stuff around in there and you're going to cause a disaster. The tach is electro-mechanical. Your problem is mechanical.

AGAIN; the actual repair just requires some careful attention; not a "quick schpritz."

I found that you also need to clean the needle rest (0 RPMs). It can also cause the lazy tach... Good luck with the cleaning.

"in brittney spears bush", yes now ;).

Easy man... That's what I've experienced, what can I say. Perhaps it was some residue left over from previous oilings or whatever, but I've had to 'tap' on the gauge to get it to leave home base. Can't hurt to clean that up anyways eh?

Aha! That is exactly the problem I was having with my Maxim-X. I have wondered if the tach might be the cause ... Now I *REALLY* need to find a way to test it.

Just disconnect the tach from in the headlight bucket if your #2 and #3 fire up it's the tack if not something else is the issue.

Okay, it will run without the tach? I had the understanding that it couldn't. Will try as soon as possible, right now am getting the replacement wiring harness installed.
