82 xj650 16k miles. No known valve adjustments.

    Following Fritz's guide.

I have an english/metric feeler gauge set. All (both exhaust and intake) my valve measurements except one had the same measurement. 0.051mm. The odd man out was Cyl 1 Exh @ 0.038mm.

My gauge set has 0.038mm, 0.051mm, 0.063mm and larger gauges. I thought maybe I wasnt @ 90 degrees and that was messing up my measurement, but I remeasured cyl 1 Intake about 12 times between 80-100 degrees and 0.051 passed under and 0.063 did not.

So, is it possible that they are all just uniformly out of sync or what? Is my set not granular enough? Should I try to find one that has like 0.035, 0.040, 0.045, 0.050, 0.055, etc etc Thanks.

I suggest getting a dedicated metric gauge set and measuring again. It is much more accurate and easier then converting.

You need to get a set of metric gauges with ALL the possible sizes, it's bigger than this, but smaller that that one, wont cut it.

Not sure what your clearances are supposed to be, but I feel like the more feelers ya got, the better.

I would think you'll find that they aren't all the same amount off if you had a more precise set...

Intake is supposed to be .11 - .15
    Exhaust is .16 - .20

Yeah I checked 2 different stores for metric only gauges. I guess I will have to buy online.

Yeah, I am using a set of standard feeler gauges to. All the local places around me don't have metric ones either. If you guys find a god set on amazon or something could you post a link??! The only metric sets I can find go in large steps. Like, .15mm straight to .20mm. How are you supposed to be very accurate with that?

Harbor freight has a nice set also. it is metric/s.a.e. but has the correct range

Here are the SAE measurements, because it's cold and wet and I'm being lazy not going out to the shed to get them.

    0.0015", 0.002", 0.0025", 0.003", 0.004", 0.005", 0.006", 0.007", 0.008", 0.009", 0.010" (2), 0.011", 0.012", 0.013", 0.014", 0.015", 0.016", 0.017", 0.018", 0.019", 0.020", 0.021", 0.022", 0.023", 0.024", 0.025", 0.026", 0.028", 0.030", 0.032", 0.035"

Even metric/sae sets are a pain to use. Since the valve clearence range is .11 to .15 mm, thats range in inches is .004 to .006 inches(.0043 to .0059 acutally). A standard sae set has a .004, .005 and .006 blades only. That is only 3 measurments. A metric set will have a .11, .12, .13, .14 and .15 blades. It is much more accurate with 5 measurments to see if the valve is in spec.

I found a set that had a .0015" and .0025" - I felt more confident with the half thousandths reading mixed in there to get me past the 'feels bigger than this, smaller than that' problem.
