I would start with a carb cleaning and sync. Search the forums for "church of clean"

And while you're at it, check the rear wheel for delamination.
And the date codes on the tires.
and the date codes on the front brake line.
    And the valve clearances.

Valve clearances need to be in spec before the carb sync.

You'll need to do a full "field strip" and cleaning on the carbs, properly adjust their float levels and then get them sync'ed.

There's no "quick fix" you've got some work to do.

Be prepared to do quite a bit of work on this bike to get it safe and reliable.

Start by reading through this: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=27544.html

And THIS is of utmost importance: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=15874.html

Hello aaronh110.... "just bought a 81 650 a few days ago and im having some frustration with getting it up and running".. well now you've got somethings to do before it's up and running and safe to ride. Believe me you're not th first or last with such a statement.

Background info' is always helpful as is accepting good logical advice. Do some searching and reading, good luck with th bike.
