Go through the list my friend.

Dont trust the previous owner has done anything. Buy the manual and CD, and go through all the maintenance from the first checkup to the 20k checkup.

I would say the most important would be:

    Check Valves.
    Check Tires/brakes/suspension.

The brakes can determinate over time, and the valves need adjusting every 7-10k I believe.

If the bike is running and handling fine after it arrives. It would be safe to ride it after the standard saftey stuff is checked over. If it doesnt run well, then we will all be here to help ya.

    Good luck, and congrats.

Ok,like I said previous,I`m not new to biking, and certainly no stranger to xj`s,feels like them mikuni carbs have become permanent extentions to my fingers!!! had them apart that many times!!!! hope my new xj is trouble free for a while, has good service history etc, anyway, always gratefull for any info, tips etc,i know theres always someone in here that will know the answer!
Anyway,I`m retired now so will be hopefully manafacturing my own downpipes in stainless,so will let you know how i get on,who knows, might even make a bob or two! though s/steel is extortionate to buy at the moment, but will use m/steel to jig up etc.
    All for now
