Well i recently bought a 1982 Yamaha maxim XJ750. When i got the bike it was not running, i started by cleaning the carbs because it sat for about 8 years or so non running. that got the bike to run but not long or well. upon inspection i found the floats where in upside down and did not let in enough fuel. i got that straightened out and i have it running pretty well, i checked valve clearance and it was all good, all cylinders are firing, the floats are set a bit high and that's one of the next things i will be addressing. the bikes are a bit temperamental from what i have read on this forum but i haven't found it to bad i like the technician aspects of this bike and it looks cool and its pretty fast so i am happy. plus any day you can take something from not running to running without spending is good in my eyes.

I have an 82 750 Maxi as well, they're extremely fun bikes to ride, I absolutely love mine.

However that being said, make sure you check a few things on it, since it sat for 8 yrs, the tires are probably bad as well as the brake lines (they're only designed for 6 yr life span). Also rear brake de-lamination is a problem for these bikes, for your safety don't assume its been done, look at it yourself. You also might want to change all the fluids, fresh fluids make a difference. Also you will want to check your valve clearances, since many owners never bothered to do it.

All this is fairly easy stuff, if you're a decent wrench turner, but you'll want to get a manual at the minimum, a shop manual is also good and there is an XJ cd out there.

Sorry to sound like a downer, but these bikes are approaching 30 yrs old and while they are great bikes, they need attention, usually due to previous owners neglect. A little work now will pay off in the long run and working on your bike is very gratifying.

As you have probabaly already seen there is a lot of knowledge about these bikes and members are more than happy to help. Enjoy your ride.
