    Looks like a flasher relay.

And yes, it can cause your non signaling signals.

    I dont think it would...

I cant say 100% its the flasher relay. It just looks like it.

Its under the gas tank near the front of the bike right under the ignition coils. Need to look under top part of frame. It is hard to find when your not sure where to look.

The relay locations differ between bikes.

Is it a 550 Seca, or 550 Max?

The headlight relay DOES NOT have anything to do with the turn signals, and the turn signal relay IS DIFFERENT than the headlight relay.

The 550 does have a headlight relay (some XJ bikes don't) that only allows the headlight to come on once the bike has been started.

This is your headlight relay :

the wires to it should be white, black, red w/yellow stripe, blue w/black stripe.

And if your flashers arent working, the its safe to assume that its the relay that is under the coils.

I wish I could be more help, I suppose you could check to see if your getting power to the relays with a multimeter.

If you are getting power to the relays, and if your comfotable soldering, then you can open relays up and repair them. They are not really that advanced of devices. Chances are the connections inside have either rusted out or corroded to a lovely greenish white color. Clean them up, and many times you can save a costly replacment.

*Edit* If anyone can solve this issue its Fitz. Hell take care of ya.

Quit crossing wires before you cook something.

PM me with your email address and I'll send you the necessary reference materials.

The headlight SHOULD NOT come on until the motor is running.
