Have a slight carb problem. I just rebuilt the carbs, put in a jetting kit, & got rid of the airbox and using individual filters. Bike ran great for 25 miles or so then all of the sudden it really ran like crap. Needed lots of choke to barley get it home. Suspecting an air leak, it had isolated the filters with aluminum foil (to prevent any overspray from entering the carbs) and sprayed electrical cleaner around the suspected areas. Sure enough it really ran rough then. (seems to be a leak right around the vent(?) tube connecting the two right carbs, faulty o ring iguess.) Now my question is how important is that vent tube? and were they going into the original air box or venting straight to the atmosphere? I dont recall them pulling any vacuum before. Any ideas?

    Thankx. Motocat

You should ask this question down in the mods section. The carbs need a lot of readjusting with pods. These bikes do not like pods and in most cases run like crap with them. Some people get them to run fairly decent, you are likely to get more help there and less "What the H*LL are you doing".

Post a pic of where the air leak is. I can't picture a "vent tube" in front of carbs. There is a vacuum port on the rubber carb to engine mounts, it needs to be pluggeg. I have has that cap blow off while riding.

What I really don't understand is that it ran really good then all of the sudden............. The Yamaha parts book list it as a
    29

    4V7-14988-00-00

PIPE, STARTER CON (in the carb parts)

N ot sure if this attachment will work.

Is your carb modded with a vent hose like in the discussion talked about here?

You say theres a yamaha part #. Not the case then... Odd cause those look like hitachis and im looking at hitachis right now, and they do not have that there.

    What year is the bike?

1985 model XJ700 carbs had those vent tubes; 1986 models did not (hitachi's). Not sure about the Mikuni's (water-cooled engines), but the format is probably the same. It's an emissions thing........

so would you think that I could just plug them up?

I thought that they might be Mik's. I'm gonna take them off today, anyway, so I'll find out.
