I have a good lead on a pretty solid bike. Looks to be in very good cond, but hasnt run in many years and has no title.

How much could I expect to get if I part it out on this site? Not doing it for the money, I just need a new exhaust setup and this one's appears to be in near mint cond. Thanks

You should just get VERMONT Plates.

You don't need a TITLE for ANY Vehicle over 20 Years Old in VT>

    Heres the Vermont Deal:

There's more than one way to skin a cat.
    Buy the Bike.
Get that Bill of Sale filled-out and signed.

You may have to take a day-off and grab the Ferry and come visit with me for a quick ride to the nearest Vermont DMV, ...
This might be worth a shot!
    Because!!!
    We can go through Vermont!!!

You DO NOT have to be a Vermont resident.
Simply fill out VT DMV forms DMV-VD119 Registration App Instructions and DMV-VD119-Vehicle Reg Tax Title App and send them along with a
::::>> Comprehensive Bill of Sale <<::::
Send the bill of sale and a check to the VT DMV. Both forms can be found here:

    dmv.vermont.gov/fees/tax_title

•• You need to fill out the odometer disclosure form in the instruction book. In the Tax/Title Application form you need to fill out blocks 1A, 1B, 2, 3C, 4A, 5B, 6A, and 9.

•• The :::Comprehensive::: bill of sale has to be notarized and contain enough info to identify the bike, like VIN, color, make, model, year etc.
Fill out the paperwork and mail it all in to the VT DMV and 2 weeks later you should have permanent or temp registration and VT plates valid for 1 year in your mailbox.
(Or, ... maybe MY Mailbox) ::hint::

    ••That's step 1.

••Step 2. Take the Vermont registration and the title/registration application form for the bike to your DMV. When they ask why you don't have a title, just tell them that VT doesn't issue titles on vehicles over 20 years old.

Let em look it up if they want, you'll be fine. After they admit you don't need a title they should process your forms and the VT registration and issue you a title in your area. That completes step 2.

••Step 3. Put new title someplace safe, put your new plate on the bike, go riding.

Costs: Gas, tolls, and all expenses.

You dont even need to go to vt to do this. Its done online now. Its actually easier if you live out of state for some reason.

Sounds tempting. The bike is only $300 and looks nicer than mine. But mine runs and is already registered.

Well, ... the Upside is you could have a running bike with TAGS to Sell.

Then, you make more on the deal.
The Buyer gets a Registration that he can convert to a Title for a 35-dollar Vig and be able to save one from getting parted out.

I'm with Rick on this one. While it's nice to have access to more parts, it's a great feeling riding down the blacktop and passing another XJ that still lives.

+1 on the Vermont thing.... a title can make a difference between $200 and $2000. I need to try that too.

Rick - Do you have a ballpark on the cost?

Seriously, this would work? I have a parts bike that is in decend shape and runs but no title and it is near impossible to get a title in PA unless you can find the previous owner and get them to go to a DMV with you.

They have added a wrinkle to the works. They now require a VIN verification form to be filled out by a state official. It is a separate form. I know this because I received the form in the mail 2 weeks ago when they returned my check along with the initial forms that I sent them.

I have not figured out who I should take the bike to, whether a "agent"(dmv ripoff place) can do it or not. The state police say to take it to the dmv but the dmv says to take it to the police!!!

    Anyone figure this out yet?

    Take it to the Police.

They will "Fill-in" the form and sign-off the requirement.

Plus, they will "Run" the VIN to make sure the Bike isn't hot.

You might be able to have the Police come to you.
Call a Non-emergency number and ask for a Radio Car to stop-by to assist you with the verification.

Most Cruisers are equipped with a computer that will run the VIN right there.

I'm not sure you've seen the new form from Vermont. I called the State police barracks and they are the ones that told me to take the bike to the MVA. According to the form from Vermont, it has to be(taken from the Vermont form) :
"VIN verifications done out-of-state are to be completed by motor vehicle officials or state level law enforcement officials, or by those personnel authorized by that other state to perform VIN verifications, subject to approval by the Vermont Commissioner of Motor Vehicles. Military personnel may have the VIN verification completed by the Commanding Officer or Provost Marshal of the military base. VIN verifications performed out-of-state must be accompanied by a letter of identification of agent on official letterhead."

Getting someone to write and sign that letter is turning out to be the hard part!

Write up the letter as a text file and take it to the official so they can copy/paste/print and sign on letter head. All they have to do beyond that is confirm the VIN.

The county courthouse here had a form necessary for getting a court ordered title which was a letter for a previous case with the identifying info blacked out and you had to retype it with the correct info. I made them a blank form and took it in to them to use electronically. Now they can generate samples all day long and even give you an e-copy to enter your information on ... I know the guy who manages the BMV local to me and I am sure he would do it. He does VIN confirmations for vehicles coming into the state every day. Ohio has a form specific for that. Also, and dealership in the state that sells used cars will have someone who can fill out that same form.
