I can't ride until I rebuild my front calipers! (One is haning up a little, and after I got new rotors, I DON'T want to risk warping them) But the rebuild kits are on back order! It'll probably be a few weeks yet! I just wanna ride! haha

XJ's are a lot more fun on the road than looking pretty in the garage!

Hey Man I wish you lived closer. I'm 18 bought my xj cash. Got it with only 12k on it.

Sadly Friday I laid her down at around 30mph. Just got scared and didn't lean far enough over. I am in the process of fixing her now so I know just how you're feeling lol. Wish I only had to redo a caliper ;)

While she is down I am going to do a little bit of mods... Exhaust, air filter, led lights :)

What are your plans for the Exhaust and Air Filter Mods?

    Sorry to thread jack elgato!!!!

I was going to post a new thread but because you ask...

So far the plan is k and n air filter.

and I need an opinion on

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yamaha-XJ650-70 ... fb&vxp=mtr

My left side exhaust is damaged and I'm going with white fairings and redoing the black engine paint...

While I have it apart is there anything else you would recommend to give it a little extra?

Don't go with the K&N filter, they allow too much airflow. For reusable filters, I am told UNI's are good.

Make certain that the exhaust provides the same amount of back pressure as the originals or it throws off the performance.

Okay so no k&n should I just keep it stock?

How would I check that? ( forgive my lack of knowledge here)

I heard I may have to rejet with a different exhaust?

I have a K&N filter in a standard airbox (including the "snorkel"). I also have a Sebring 4 into 1 fitted. Jetting is standard (UK) and the bike runs perfectly, including at top end. It didn't used to, but the more I ride it the better it seems to get - touch wood!

I know that throwing pods and slashed pipes at these bikes can throw out the carbs, but personally think the K&N/4 into 1 can work with no probs. It seems that every bike is different...

So I should be able to just slap the 4-1 on with no negative side effects? My left side got smashed up in a low slide and I think I like the single better anyway..

Going 4-1 here in the US you will want to watch your plugs very closely. Same with the K&N. The US bikes were jetted leaner than our UK counterparts.

You should just start another thread. :)

Sorry for the waiting you're going through, man. Waiting for parts is lame. I planned out my full day of work today meticulously for weeks in advance so I could get it all done and still be able to ride tomorrow, haha!

Sometimes life just springs it on you though. You'll just appreciate it more when you get to ride it again though, that first ride back is always so sweet.

The Mac 4-1 I have introduced a little flat spot around 5-6k rpm.

AND only after one year mine are starting to show signs of rust. Around the rear end hanger flange, and on the bottom of the headers where they come together.

I should send MAC an email asking wtf lol. I drenched the thing in WD-40 before she went to bed too.

Don't mod it at all, stick to stock, the 700 Maxim-X has more than enough power stock, IF the valves are in spec and the carbs are tuned correctly. Sports bike engine and performance in a cruisers disguise, you can't beat it lol.

You start putting pods etc on it and you are opening a can of worms and asking for a shed load of trouble.

Get four into two, keep stock air box

I have decided keep it stock as far as the air box goes. I did order the 4 to 1 I f I dont like it I can just put the original back on. It is dinged but not badly messed up.

I'm running Yoshimura 4 into 1 w/ Supertrapp mufffler and foam air filter. I also had a flat spot between 5-6K but lifted needles by installing small washers and flat spots gone. Sounds really good.

I imagine the weight loss helps in the bikes get up as well?

gehiv good to know what to do if that is an issues

Wish I had dimensions of the washers to share. I'll be back in the carbs in a few weeks. I'm adding a K&N High Flow air filter and going from 120 Mains /40 Pilots to 124/42 combination and I'll pull the dimensions then....

The weight loss would be trivial. If anything, it would raise the center of gravity, making the bike more wobbly. But not in any appreciable way, I think. Just not enough weight to be a factor.

Again, instead of the K&N, the UNI should be fine and provide the same airflow as the original paper type.

I haven't a clue regarding how to evaluate the back pressure, I just know it needs to be a certain amount. Your car is the same way. I have an Infiniti G20 and the exhaust on it went bad, developing a crack right at the joint between the cat. converter and the resonator. I could lfeel the drop in performance, especially at the low end. The G20 only has a 2.0 L engine and losing probably 25% of its acceleration power at the low end was painful. So having too little back pressure or too much has a negative effect on your machine.

Stock exhausts, mufflers, periodically show up on flea bay ... Look! there's one now ...

Funny you mention the car thing... Mine just crapped out on my accord. 2.4l sounds like a dirt bike and super slow now..

I've decided to just stick with my stock exhaust I think... Its banged up but not ruined...

Could I run it w/o the mufflers?

The mufflers are what are giving the back pressure ... Just like your accord is super slow, so will your bike become.

I was on a ind of road-trip with my brother Thursday and the exhaust came apart. The noise was so loud we had to stop. We just wanted to patch the thing together so we could finish the trip as I had a full exhaust sitting at my house ready to put in ... I ended up having to buy/have installed new pipe from the cat back to the muffler ... Car ran much better after that, in addition to not making us deaf.

    Thanks man good to know!

and back on elgato's original intent...

The anticipation IS killing me! Bike is waiting on handle bars, some hoses, gaskets, and a few other things. I go on vacation at the end of the week... But want to have her running before I go so that I can ride when I get back!
