I am changing the oil on my 85 Maxim and the previous owner powder coated the sight glass.

The bike oil was warm when I drained it, and left the filter off for a couple days so it all trickles out

Yesterday I over filled the bike with oil, and it was coming out the top of the bike, blah blah.

How can I be sure I have ALL the oil out so that I can fill it with the proper 2.6 qts of oil?

I'll let the bike run for a couple seconds over a drain pan, but I don't want the bike running without oil in it, obviously.

    Help!

Did you remove the SUMP plug and not just the filter housing?

If you drain the sump and replace the oil filter, you can add the specified amount of oil without an issue.

I'd get that sight glass uncovered though. You need to monitor your oil level; it's the first sign you'll get of a carb float problem. (A sudden rise in oil level.)

What's the name of the bolt inside the oil filter housing? I'm not talking about the oil filter bolt either, the bolt that runs vertical

    Umm, no.

Not sure what "vertical" bolt you're referring to.

I was referring to the actual oil pan plug; like on a car. On your bike it's on the front of the sump, below and slightly behind the oil filter housing.

No I got that all drained. The PO f***ing spray painted that bolt and I didn't see it.

I theres a bolt that runs vertical in the filter housing and I would like to know what that is

Possibly a bolt that keeps the cases together?

Find it in the fiche http://www.yamahapartshouse.com/home.aspx and give us the diagram and reference number; or post a pic. Still not sure what bolt you're referring to. There are a couple of crankcase bolts in the oil filter cavity on the front of the motor, if that's what you mean.

It is the one that needs not be messed with when changing oil. There are only 2 bolts to contend with...the filter cover bolt, and the drain plug bold.
