As you can see i've massaged about everything on it. Its far from complete but im working hard on it. I picked it up for $300. Needed a coil the carbs rebuilt, and some tlc. Im running a cop setup from an Escape. I wired the coils in a series and everything seems to be working well. I have yet to ohm them yet to see if they're in range or not but since its not running yet I'll find out soon enough. Obviously the pipes aren't quite done yet but I think its going to turn out to be pretty cool for my first bike.
Does anyone see a problem with running the exhaust that short? The fact that there isn't any backpressure I realize, but I'll sacrifice for the simplicity of it.

    That's a scoot with additude!
The exhaust is kinda short. Looks like it would scrape the pavement on a tight corner too. I can't see getting enough back preasure with the pipes that short. Is there some kind of baffle in those mufflers? The way it sits now, your ears will be ringing unless you use ear plugs.
I like the style so far. Keep us updated on the progress.

I like the style, but the pipes may be a problem, back pressure aside, they look a little low, looks like they'll drag on a sharp turn

Other than that, I love the look, its awesome

I cut 2" out of the pipes today to bring it up quite a bit. Also painted the wheels all black and touched upon the non existent rear fender. I'll get some more pics up tomarrow.
Thanks for all the great comments.

    Well ... wow!
What a project. Whew. Man, you took ... like, everything off!
    That's just-about stripped clean.

I think you should put the Back Brakes back-on, though.
I'd be scared to ride it like that.

You can't be doin' that "Freddie Flintstone" thing, now!

Looking good Allbiz! I like the idea of the blacked out wheels. I was looking to do something with mine to make them look different, and I think painting them black gives them a kind of custom look. It makes your bike look cleaner. Keep us posted!

After a little closer examination of things ... I think you should add a "Fitted -- sorta trapezoidal-shaped *wedge* reinforcement" that gets welded-in between the two riser pipes at the swing-arm pivot.

You might even be able to find MACK or PETERBILT tie-rods to substitute for the rigids on the rear. The tie-rod ends could offer you an element of "Adjustable tuning" for the ass-end.

Thanks RickCo, I like the idea of a gusset in between those pipes. I'll work on that today. As for the tie rod idea, im using turnbuckles for a 4pt. hitch similar to your idea, which gives me the adjustability for the rear. If you look hard in the new pics you can see the setup.
as for the seat its not quite done yet, I'm not sure what i want to do with it yet. I might not even use the one pictured.
Thanks for the great ideas though fellas

I am makin a bike with somewhat of the same idea. One thing I had to do is fab up some farther forward pegs and some forward controls and got rid of the original pegs all together. Gives it more relaxed chopper feel. I'll pt up some pics when I'm done, but not to hard to do. Like the bike! some nice sidecovers will clean her up real nice

I took the stock foot pegs off and put on some old bmx pegs i had laying around on it. That seemed to clean it up well enough for me. I've taken some pics of tonights progress as well.

That's wild Allbiz! You should wire those brake lights as the turn signals too and get rid of the amber turn signal lights. It would clean it up even more.

Oh you can ride a bobber in the rain alright. It even feels kinda cool when you go thru big puddles - it tickles your back!! That's when rain gear comes in quite handy.

I'm really not concerned with riding in the rain, I dont plan on it, but if i get stuck in it im going to be soaking wet anyway. Thats a good call on the brake lights as turn signals, I'll surely do that. Thanks for all the awesome feedback!

I'm pretty sure they have to be amber. I'm not sure on the spacing though. I do belive that it is the least of my worries considering my exhaust lol. Thanks for looking out for me though.

You sure about the amber thing?
I guess you mean just for motorcycles... every chevy has red signals (think about Cavaliers, S10s and Silverados).

I know where I am it's illegal to run any other color light than Red, Amber or White. But as far as indicators go, red is fine... Plus the signals I just ordered come with both red and amber lenses (I'll probably still use amber just for safety reasons).

I considered running dual taillights as blinkers too. But I couldn't figure out how to wire them... I mean, If you have your indicator on and you press your brakes, I guess you just lose your indicator (stays solid red)?
Didn't seem like much of a problem at the time.... but what about lane changes and what not...
Like you said, people are going to know you're there anyway with those crazy-ass pipes.

Anyone wired this kind of setup successfully?

use a trailer wiring box/harness for a chev pickup or car, they are like $15 and work great, done it to my buddies ninja with his tail light.

The rear turn signal do not have to be amber colored. Some Harleys come with red turn signals on the rear.
As Low 1-5-0 stated, the trailer adapter for vehicles works perfect for intigrating your turn signals and taillights work together as one. I did it on mine and it gives me two more brake lights (turn signals are red)

Hey I never thought about that - Running your turn signals as brake lights AND as a taillight, seems obvious now...
I think I'm going to go this route. My new taillight is quite small.

So I'll be going for the red indicators on the back afterall. And Amber on the front (I'm pretty sure that you're not allowed to have red indicators in FRONT - where I live... again, this is for cars, so I'm assuming bikes too).

Low-1-5-0, you're Local to me - where did you pick up the trailer adaptor for 15 bucks? Cdn Tire?

I looked briefly at the wiring for those lights. I cant figure out how it works though. It's got a ground, and a red and yellow wire. I assumed that the red wire was the running light, and the yellow was the brake light. when i guve 12v to the red wire they come on, but if i give juice to the yellow one they don't. I'm not sure I completely understand how to get them to work as they are supposed to, much less as a turn signals as well. Maybe someone could "shine some light" on this situation.
    Thanks.

    EDIT:
If you're talking about the stock wiring harness on the XJ, your ground [may not be] the wire you think it is.
I cant remember which one is ground, but it wasn't [Necessarily] black - Judging by what you said it must be yellow...
Use a tester to see which wire is on when the bike is going, which is on when you hit the brakes in order to find out which is brake, and which is running light... or you could just try switching the wires around on the bike.

Also, if you're testing on the bike (running power through the ground), you will probably have blown a fuse - so check that too - it will at least be a little burned up, and you dont want your taillight going when you're out on the road.

I forgot to specify, the light sockets that actually came with the lights, not the stock bike harness.
I've got some pics of the lights on, as well as the license plate bracket/light too.

This bike is sick. Love it.

As for the lights: I don't know about everywhere else, but in Indiana we're not even required to have turn signals at all, let alone any specification about what color they need to be or how far apart. We don't have to have rear-view mirrors either, haha.

I've seen a few bikes get knocked-down at Inspection for having Turn Signals too small for the bike.

It really upsets the Owner who spends some dough for LED's and goes through all that mounting and wiring hassle to find out that they aren't Street Legal.

We have to undergo Inspection every year in Massachusetts.

Anybody ever hear from this guy again, I'm wanting to see the finished product! It gave me some ideas on how to keep my chop a little more in budget by keeping my swingarm and not building an entirely new hardtail. would those pipes be feasible with a couple of baffles in each pipe?

P.S. Sorry for digging up an old thread!

    Well fellas,
This project has long been down the tubes.
I purchased a wrecked RC51 shortly after the start of this and rebuilt it. Aside from that, I've got my dsm project of 4 years that I was running out of enthusiasm on. To top it all off I'm heading to Wyotech on March 28th. Thats like right NOW! On top of the job I haven't even had time to think about this piece. Really the project was cool for me to mess around with, but I wasn't completely into it. I knew it wouldn't ever be the performer I've always wanted. I can tell you this though, the RC is an incredible machine. 1000cc V twin, fuel injected, gear driven cams(think pete jackson). The sound and handling of this bike is more than I could ever ask for from any bike. It's a little heavy, but it's incredibly well balanced.

Seeing the old pics of this bike really bring back some good memories. I was building this at the same time I was finishing up my foxbody Mustang build. I'm sorry I don't have any of the most recent pics of my bike but I assure you it looks very similar to the latest pictures I had posted.

To the comment about the hot sticker,
No I didn't just move here. I do know better.
Do you think that would change my plans on it, I seriously doubt it. Everything I've ever owned has been illegal in some way. I've learned that if you don't act like a complete hammerhead cops never bother me.
Also I know people that would gladly sticker such a sick build. It wasn't a death trap. Had good brakes, turn signals and good tires.

So I'm sorry for the rather lame update, but thats the way it stands as of now. I will be back within the weekend to post up some pics of my current bike and the talon project.
I can assure you it's nothing less than amazing.

So do you still have the bike? I know its hard to put money in something when you've got a newer sportbike in the stable as well(My daily rider is an 06 Honda 600RR). But it's still cool to have a reliable street machine and then for short trips break out the chop, and scoot around town. Also are you gonna stick around the forum?

I'll be around. I'm a member of about 10 forums that I frequently visit. I usually just lurk, see whats new and brush up on some info about the bike. I don't visit here very often though.
Oh, I forgot to mention, my newest bike project will be my dads 46' Indian Chief. I'm going to get an after market fender and bob it as well. Don't worry though, all the original tins that aren't used will be stored in a safe place and the frame will remain uncut. I'm not a complete idiot lol.
I've attached a picture of it. It's a shitty cellphone pic, but you get the idea.
So with the addition of the Indian to the project list it only makes me realize that the maxim project will most likely be getting scrapped to make room in the shop. Sorry guys, I've moved onto bigger, better, but way more expensive projects.
Thanks for all the enthusiasm, and the kind words about my project. I noticed how many views this thread had...wow, I guess its a hit.
