I guess the real question is "should I?"

I've ordered four carb kits (from the place in the site's link page), but I'm having second thoughts. So far, I've taken out the battery, battery box, carb assembly, etc., and feel comfortable that I can get it all back together, even as a brand new mechanic with more tools than knowledge. But is a newbie mechanic in way over his head with a carb rebuild? Should I leave this for someone with more experience than I, or just dive in and figure it out? How tough is this job?

If you have the tools, a service manual,(or links here on this site)And any mechanical ability I say go for it. It's just a matter of disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly. Put parts for each carb together(don't mix parts)in a tray or zip lock baggies, take pics along the way as a reference. I think you'll do fine.
And theres always all the great folks here to get you through it.

You have all you need Mark, the manual, the tools, and the desire. It might seem a little intimidating at first but don't you fret, it is very easy once the carbs are off. Go for it! Don't forget to pull the clutch cable as well, it will make the job much easier. Rich gave you some great advice and pointers. You will be just fine. Let us know if you run into questions.

best way to learn is first hand experience, make notes, take pictures, and go for it !!!
one thing I keep coming across with these carbs, is don't dismantle the bank of four !!!

Well if your going to replace the throttle shaft seals, (and you should after 20 odd years they have to be in bad shape) you will have to take them apart. I did mine and had no problems. Your going to re-sync anyway so it won't matter if you take them apart.
    Good luck you'll be fine.

I've pulled mine apart and so long as you reassemble exactly as you pulled them apart with the throats on a sheet of glass for alignment, you’re good to go. Take lots of pictures and notes, you'll need them. Wish you were local, I'd have you over and we would knock them out over a glass of lemonade. Good luck! Rob.

JazzMouse I am about 2 hours from you. I am pulling the head off my bike today but if you want some help I may be able to come to you next weekend. I'm sure you can handle it , if I can anybody can. Hell I'm just a dumb old redneck. If you want to come up this way for a mini carb clinic then come on. My mini carb clinics are cheap I provide a YICS tool, carb dip, orings, colortune plug, and a garage. You bring at least one 6 pack! Rednecks work cheap! :)

Well, I'll give it a shot then! Blue, I work most weekends (ah, the wonderful world of retail!). I'll see what I can do, and if I find myself in over my head, I'll come crawling with that sixpack!

You're welcome. And don't crawl.....it puts the beer close to the pavement and makes it warmup in the spring and summer. (hehe)

i must chime in...... 40 odd years ago, i was broke & had to fix my own rigs. Step at a time, & by knowing how to both ask sensible questions, & rtead shop books.....well, from them I would amaze myself in being able to fix things. Take notes, use lots of cans, labeled however, to keep seperate various sub assemblies & hardware....I do that to this day. And I still....like when I had to rebuild Herselfs HD 5 speed, which Ive never done before, I follow the manual, take notes, go very slow......and it works.
Go slow. Dont work against a deadline. its fun. Youll be very pleased.

Gotcha, Mutt; I'm definitely in no hurry. I'm looking at this bike as my "learning experience" anyway, and to be honest, it is fun! The carb kits came today, so I may get started tomorrow, as I have the early shift tomorrow.
