hi folks! 20 years ago I had an '82 XJ650 and I loved it. I've just bought another identical bike and I'm just trying to work the bugs out.

Bear with me if this is a tired old topic - tried a search but there`s just too much info to sift through!

The question is: is there any way to really fix cracked and leaking intakes or do i have to just suck it up and buy a new set? I'm talking about the ones between the carbs and the pistons.

Also, can I assume the inside pair are in the same shape or do I have to take the tank off and inspect them?

I've attached an image of the right side. Best place to buy them if required?

    Thanks!
    Simon

Have you confirmed if they are leaking or not? There is a metal sleeve inside, the cracks may be superficial. Try blowing (unlit) propane torch at the boots while engine is running. Increase in revs indicates a leak. Check the little rubber caps on top of the vacuum tubes, too.

In your search, did you see one of the bike inner-tube repair methods? Check that out, too.

Honestly, mine all (3 bikes!) look worse than that but NONE of them go all the way through.

The only way to be sure is to pull the carbs and flex the manifolds from the inside with a fingertip.
