Valve question..

    When checking the valves on my Maxim X, do I want the cams pointed directly away from the bucket, or do I use the timing mark, which leaves them facing up and to the right? There are three dots on the cam caps, should the cam be pointed at one of these?

    I've seen both answers, I adjusted them with cams pointed directly away...

    I'm having a lot of trouble getting the bike going, I drove it once after adjusting, but now I'm having some strange issues...

    What does it say in your manual? I would double-check the CAM timing first.

    Manual says use the mark for cyl 1, then measure 2, 4, then 3.

    I considered cam timing as a possible culprit... what sort of issues would improper timing cause?

    Lack of power, overheating, inability to idle right, bent valves, scabies . . .

    Well I don't have any of those symptoms, but I suppose I'll have to go back in and check the cam timing anyways...

    Put 1&4 at exactly TDC, then cams go in with dots lined up to cam journal arrows, which I believe will be lobes out on the left (#1 side)...

    This is a Right side picture at BDC for 1&4, so when you assemble it will be OPPOSITE of what you see here -- That means you go to TDC on 1& 4, place lobes "out" (on the #1 side) which will reveal cam dots "on top" and align them to journal arrows and you'll be on your way

    Sorry mis read your question -- the lobe is to point away from the shim (to be measured) as to make an imaginary perpendicular for a line through the lobe to the shim

    Thanks for the picture! As long as the cam lobes are to point directly away, my valves should have proper clearance, minus one intake valve :? ... I'm pretty sure I got the cam timing right but I didn't ziptie the sprockets to the chain the first time around so it could be off.

    I guess my next question would be...

    Do I set the timing with the FT mark lined up with the timing mark on the pickup, or with the lobes pointed directly away on the compression stroke?

    BTW the bike revs to the moon when I can get it to start, haven't found any air leaks so far...
