Hello all - New member

Hi there,

I just bought my first motorcycle and it happens to be an '83 xj750 Maxim with 17k miles for $750.00. It runs well enough but after reading on this board over the last couple of weeks I will assume the worst from the previous owner. I don't have a ton of experience working on vehicles besides regular maintenance (brakes, oil changes, struts) and NO experience with motorcycles. I am a sponge.

With that in mind, I am fairly adept at understanding a process and really look forward to learning everything there is to know about my bike. It is an excellent bike for sure. I will post up some pictures in the next few days.

My main question is where is the best place to buy a repair guide and owners manual as this bike came with nothing. Are there any links? I was poking around ebay, but I would rather have confirmation that I am looking at the correct books.

Also, this weekend I would like to start with by changing the oil and spark plugs. Are there any guides currently on the forum for these tasks? Is there an 'archive' of sorts for maintenance tutorials?

I look forward to contributing to this forum and am already blown away by how helpful everyone is. Thank you in advance.

There you find the XJ MAXIM, SECA, AND TURBO PARTS CATALOG. If it is not listed in the catalog. shoot a pm, or email to chacal. He stocks parts that yamaha never gave a part number to. in other words. If he can not supply it. You don't need it.
Be rest assured that chacal, and XJ4ever comes highly recomended by the membership here.

Yes. That even applies to the correct manuals for your bike in section 1 of the catalog. Which by the way you will want to get yourself either the haynes, or clymer manual for the xj650/750 for the years 80-84 to go along with the factory service manual. The owners manual for the XJ750K are few and far between, but the XJ750J owners manual will provide the same information. Or once again step on over to XJ4ever for a reprint of the original XJ750K owners manual manual.

The first step on your maintenance list should be to check out your rear brake system. The first link in my signature will take you to bigfitz's write up about the delamination of the rear brake shoes. This is a very serious issue that needs to be checked out immediately.
