    Hi guys,

I am back in Madrid after my adventures in Vancouver, WA with my XJ750MK '83. Sold the bike to a guy before I left, just to find that he left it on the side of the road 2 months after he bought it from me...After all the work I put on that bike! Somebody should be slapped.

Anyway, back in Madrid, I bought a XS400RK '83 (Seca) a couple years ago. No problems so far and bike has 37k km now (bought with 33k)

Now I have a weird problem I am not able to pinpoint and I think you guys should be able to help.

After I release clutch in first gear, I have a clunking noise quite loud, that repeats about each turn of the rear wheel but not as loud. Noise seems to come from gear/clutch assembly. Even without gear, I hear it and feel it, like something is rubbing with a metallic noise.

Could it be just the chain? Sprocket?

Will adjust the chain (probably loose), change the clutch cable (Probably about to snapp) and adjust the clutch, but I have no hopes that will fix it. Any ideas?

Get well RickCoMatic, I couldn't have survived my XJ / XS without you.

    Possibly.

If it's like its larger brethren, it may have an oil "deflector" plate in the bottom of the clutch housing that might have come loose.

Or something else horrible is going on in there; I'd pop the cover and have a look before something breaks altogether.

Odd thing is, if I put gear in and release clutch completely, only after 1-2 seconds, I will hear the noise.

Rolling along on neutral I "feel" something rubbing. I guess I will definitely check the chain first and let you know.

I also have the clutch cable, so thats a good second step (Change + Adjust)

    Cheers!

Having an xs400rj, myself, and a guy I work with has one in near mint condition, I would suggest rear brakes should be looked at. Whatever you do look at, let us know what you do and don't find. I can't really see the chain guard doing that, though. I'm leaning more toward something with the back rim assembly, starting with brakes.
