    What's on the front?

How old is IT? (Check date code.) You might want to replace both as a set.

Dunlop D404's are a good all-around tire; as are Bridgestone Spitfires (popular for the Max because of the RWL.) Both are moderately-to-low priced; there are cheaper tires out there or you can spend a whole lot more.

When you pull the rear wheel, be sure to check the brake shoes: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=15874.html

Also check the condition of the rear wheel bearings; you might want to consider replacing them because it's easy and cheap insurance: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=35134.html

And keep an eye on your chain. If it's rusted internally, even in only one area, it won't hold adjustment and will begin to "bleed red" when lubed. If either of these conditions are observed, REPLACE the chain and sprockets. Once the pins in the chain have had their hardened surfaces compromised by rusting/pitting, the chain will wear rapidly. A properly maintained chain on an XJ 550 should only need adjusting every 800~1000 miles. If you can't go 300 without adjusting it's new chain time.

IF IT BREAKS it can come up and wrap around the starter and break the engine case castings.

You need to replace both sprockets when you replace the chain or your new chain won't last. XJ4Ever has them and they're not expensive.
