Oil blowing out of oil breather?

    The first few times this happened I thought it was because I slightly overfilled it, which I did, and it would stop once the excess came out. I read there would be a slight mist sometimes, but today it was pouring out, all over my pants and shoe. Any thoughts?

    Take the oil filler cap off and sniff. If it smells like gasoline, then the floats are sticking and it is time for a thorough cleaning.

    I would believe it if they needed a cleaning, but no, I didn't smell any gas

    I take it you are filling the oil to the level when the bike is upright, and not on the side stand?

    What areyour compression numbers? How many miles on the engine?

    So this all started when you overfilled it with oil....i suspect you STILL have too much oil in that engine.

    Its been overfilled in the past?

    The sidecover has some cavities for the breather (oil separator) maybe its full.

    Darkfibre, no it was on it's kickstand, I take it thats not right? Mook1al, my odo says 60,400 which may or may not be right and I don't know anything about compression numbers. Darkfibre, the cover has cavities on the breather side? how do I check and drain them?

    I didn't know there was a level to fill it to, like a marker? I just put in the amount that I read in another thread was right, 2.5L if I remember right, well, around 2.9 actually

    Ok that is whe you have gone wrong....the 2.5 l is a guide only... You already have an oil filter full of oil etc etc....place bike on centre stand and fill to the level and all will be well with the world...

    Hi Wally, if you look at your clutch cover, you should see in raised script 2300cc/3. this is the amount of oil you put in the engine while it's on the center stand, also there are two marks on the side of the oil level sight glass. Keep the oil between these two marks.

    ..and once it's on th centre stand on level ground wait about 10 minutes for the oil to find it's level in th sight glass which is in th bottom of th clutch cover near th front of th rear brake pedal. If you've got new oil in and it's too high you can, with a bit of jiggling, siphon some out using a thin plastic tube slipped down inside th oil fill hole.

    If you put in 2.9L you put in about a half a liter too much.

    The bike needs to have been off for at least 10 minutes before checking; then hold it vertical (have an assistant) and check the sight glass. The oil should be just above the upper mark next to the sight glass; but with a bubble still showing at the top. The bike doesn't need to sit level for that ten minutes, it just needs to be off for that long so all of the oil can drain back into the sump.

    When the bike is on the sidestand, you should see NO oil in the level window. If you watch the sight glass as your assistant brings the bike to vertical, you should see the oil come up in the window.

    The sight glass/level window we're referring to is located on the lower portion of the clutch cover.

    If there should be no oil in the sight window with it on it's side stand then it may have been full when I filled it more, gay. I drained it today, took awhile with a siphon. Thanks everybody for the help
