Need a bit of input.....started the rebuild and now looking at rattle can finish - local auto spray firms are quoting $500+ even if I do all the prep...not on a $500 bike!!...anyways, used hi-build primer and shot a can of Rustoeum Aluminum [this the first/base coat].......was thinking gunmetal gray...but now...?? Any thoughts?

I like the grey, should make the accents on the engine/case pop out more. Always loved the silver/grey Maxims.

Whatever you do - stay within the same "family" of paints - - another paint brand will "crackle" the RustOleum.

I'd say red with gold pinstripes would give a top-dollar look.
It SHOULD be topped with the 2-part clear because gasoline definitely dissolves RustOleum.

Or you'll be packing a small towel for fill-ups ??

so........gunmetal...red....silver.....oh, and I will be clear coating....for sure..
Time: I'm steering away from the red...if I'd done a cafe, red and silver stripes..... + clip on and rear sets.
Murray + mw: Like the bike! I'm gonna shoot a can of gun at the week-end and see how we go....the aluminum, if I get the decal package, might look preety cool.....

keep you posted and thanks for the input and pics......

Did you end up doing the gunmetal gray? I'm just about to finish my Seca's build and lastly need to paint the tank and side covers. I've had a gray picked out for months and am curious to see others.

Yammadof. Looks great so far! I too am going with the grey and siilver look. The 80 650 I used to have (and the pic of my avatar) was the grey color. I did change the frame color to silver unlike the original bike. I really like how it is coming together. Here is a shot of what it looks like today.

First of all, please ignore the messy shop. Second, there is still a longgg way to go on this build. I sprayed the wheels and valve covers gun metal grey. I really like how that turned out.

Still have a lot of polishing to do on the engine pieces. Now after seeing the gunmetal on the wheels and valve cover, I am leaning toward a lighter shade of grey for the tank and covers. I still want to get as close to the tank color of the 80 650, but I really like how the silver on the frame and parts kinda blends the sliver, grey, and chrome/polished accents together.

If you do spray the gunmetal, please post pics, I'd love to see it.
