Sorry to make my first post a problem one. I just purchased a '81 Maxim 650 (YICS) that has not been started since '03. It has been setting in a climate controlled game room since '03. The bike has absolutely no rust, the pipes aren't blue and it only has 2404 miles. I have not got the bike to run yet, just started trying.

Question 1 - With the petcock in the PRI position, gas pours out of a vent line coming from the air box. I have not touched the carbs. The only thing I did was to replace the oil and gear lube. I don't think this would be normal.

Question 2 - The neutral safety switch is not working. I have to pull the clutch in to get the motor to turn over. The neutral light on the dash does not come on either. And yes, the bike is indeed in neutral.

I know, get a manual and start reading. I don't have one yet. Some guidance would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Brad

floats are stuck causing the fuel to overflow the carbs and run into the air box. from there it can make it into your crank case so check your oil for the smell of gas. time for a carb overhaul. a couple great guides on this site.

check to make sure the neutral switch is hooked up at the switch. may also just be a bad switch which can be a pain to get to. neutral light doesn't come on with the clutch only when actually in neutral. also you will need the side stand up to get it to start if the neutral sensor isn't working.

don't feel bad about asking questions its why we are all here.

It doesn't appear to have made it to the crankcase. No gas smell there. Since it has set so long I planned to run it for a few miles and change it again.

Where is the neutral switch located?

I have more questions, but they can wait.

neutral switch is screwed into the bottom front left of the oil pan (as you are sitting on the bike) it is in a deep recess just inside the frame rail.

It is a pain to pull the sensor as a regular socket of hte correct size (14mm I think) won't fit up into the recess because the frame rail is too far over. You will need to loosen the motor mounts a little and use the judicious application of force to flex the frame out of the way, grind a bit off a socket so it will fit up in, or get the special tool to reach it. Not really as hard as it seems but a bit of a pain.

If it's just gummed up from sitting it's quite possible it will start working again once the motor has been warmed up fully a couple of times (and assuming the wire hasn't broken loose somewhere.)

Hopefully it is just gummed up from setting. I have talked to XJ4EVER about a couple of other things already. I will keep this in mind if needed.
