a friend ww/ a 650 Seca got the CD set you fellows mention. So I put it in my machine, & i note the "carb clinic" titles are all pictures of bikes.....I was hoping for in depth carb info & tips....do I misunderstand what a carb clinic is, or do I have a mis, uh, print? On the second disc, theres a menu w/ a variety of topics but they all come up as "not there".....the one listing of all the tech journals seems to work tho.
Not knowing much about computers & cds an all, could someone shed some light?? thx

    Hey,

The CD's are a little biased towards the language of those who made them. This makes sense in my head. At any rate, tha "carb clinics" were basically get-together rallies. If you click "Carburators" right below "Parts Diagrams" you'll find the in-depth carb info you're looking for.

As for the "not found" stuff, the CD's are designed to be installed on your hard drive. You dump them both on the drive in numerical order and then the whole menu system will work. The menu file on CD2 contains the links to info on CD1 because it assumes that you already loaded CD1. At least that's how it looks to me.

    Good luck.

Mutt, I'm not sure what problem your having with the cd. But it should work without having to put it on your hard drive.
I put mine on my hard drive just so it was easier to accsess.

Make sure you have pop-up blockers turned off. I think this helped me out. This kept me from veiwing pages on the cd.

Hang in there someone will come up with a solution to your problem. I think we have some computer geeks on here.
Like you I'm not very computer savvy.

Pretty close. The Carb Clinic concept is a gathering where those with the tools and knowledge get together with those lacking same and teach them how to properly adjust and synchronize the carbs. There is a huge social aspect to them too -- a great way to put faces to names. I had the honour of attending the very first Carb Clinic, hosted by Ross Presta and his late wife Alice in southern Ontario. And I host the Northern Ontario Carb Clinic up here every spring. But enough about that.

The menu on volume 1 is called "main.htm" If you have a Mac or Windows machine with autostart/ autorun enabled, the file will automagically load when you insert the CD into the drive. Clicking on "Technical Publications" from within that menu results in the "Please insert Volume 2, Technical Publications" message. The menu for volume 2 is called 'go.htm' and it will automatically load when that CD is inserted. Clicking on a menu item that is on Volume 1 results in a "Please insert Volume 1 message". The idea was to help people figure out which CD they needed.

There is also a "main.htm" on volume 2 and yes, that is indeed intended to overwrite the first copy when both are copied to the hard drive. It has to be named the same as the original so that links will not be broken.

The problems creep in when people do not use or do not have the autorun/ autostart option. Unfortunately classic Mac OS limits us to a short name for an autorun file so we can't give them nice long descriptive names. Also unfortunately OSX does away with the autorun feature and 'Nix never had it so those users are often left confused.

To minimize confusion, Version 4 will feature the legacy autorun/autostart capabilities for each CD. But each CD will have it's own menu that lists only the stuff on that CD, and the name of that file will be printed on the label of that CD. It will also have a replacement 'main.htm' on volume 3 for people who copy it all to their hard drive, listing all headings.

Ok, to simplify: if you are running your buddy's CD from the CD then run "main.htm" for volume 1 and "go.htm" for volume 2.

Better yet, get your own copy in another couple of weeks when v4.0 is released and help support the effort  (Proceeds from sales fund aquisition of new materials for subsequent editions. Think of it as pooling our resources). Ok, I'm done preaching...

As for the Carb Clinics, the idea has spread across the continent. Keep your eyes peeled for mention of the BACC -- "Bay Area Carb Clinic". Sounds like Peter and the rest of the gang on your coast are really getting the hang of it.
