    Sad day guys, but lucky.

I just got home from emergency, my son and iare ok. Maxine I think is toast. Guy cut the turn to sharp and went head on into me in my left hand turning lane as I was slowed down at the red and ducking plowed right into me before I had a chance to think. No portion dover for me. Gas, oil everywhere forks are screwed, etc...

I'll post some pictures when I get a chance. I'm crushed...

Glad you are both ok. Car into bike is usually a bad deal, sorry to hear about your XJ. At least your able to tell us about it. I'd say the driver owes you more than an apology for sure, and maybe needs to have his license revoked.

That's such a raw deal , if you can't find a good replacement I have a few project bikes that you could look at. Too bad you are so far away.

Wow, that must have scared the heck out of you till you knew that your son was ok.....being a parent, that's just the natural thing. The bike is a machine and can be replaced if not repaired but it takes a long time to grow a son or daughter, kind of like a tree so you don't want them hurt since it takes so long to grow a new one.....in all seriousness though, you know what I'm saying....

The only really bad thing out of this is that you will have to fight and go back multiple times to the other drivers ins company to get paid for your bike. If you go to a Vintage restorer and get written quotations and send them in as soon as you contact them (fax or scan and email) you'll start in a better place. Otherwise, they will read you blue or black book quotes...which will prob be around 400!! I'm sure the legit guys here would help you out with that too. I was able to get full retail value for one of my vintage bikes by doing that when a woman made a mistake coming out of her heavily tree/bush-lined driveway....she didn't stop...I don't know where the heck she was going since there was nothing across from her driveway but a yard(I know because that's where I landed) so she was going to crash anyway, I just happened to be in the way when she shot out of her driveway.

Good luck and sorry about your bike,
    jeff

Something like can jack a frame. But, if the frame is still straight, and you decide to rebuild the bike, I have loads of 650maxim parts, and so do other guys here. Let me or them know what you need and we'll see what we have for you. If you contact me, it would be best to pm me.

Thanks for the well wishes guys, feeling better than expected all things considered.

I might only get a grand for the bike as that's what insured it for, but I put so much time and parts into her... I doubt the insurance company would give me more than what I insured her for. We'll see how it goes I guess... Gotta get another XJ, definitely.

Here's some pics, obviously not a real high speed collision, but a collision no doubt :(

    maxine :(

Still waiting on hearing from the adjusters... i dunno i guess it's fixable, so many usable parts to salvage though, but the question is if the chassis is bent... interested to see what happens. there are a few lower Km 650s online now, hmmmm...

Was there last night, may go back today. Had some starting issues. MAY go look at a 81 Gold Wing in Kitchener, asking $600 might buy for resale value one running, US bike with paper work.

    Sucks eh krs14...

Every time I saw a bike yesterday I counted my lucky stars ill be riding again, then slammed my hand down in disgust that the bike is sitting in a town yard.

Talked to the adjuster yesterday, he asked a bunch of questions about what I did with the bike, etc... Hope to hear something by Tuesday. Perhaps I'll get enough to replace it, around 1500 maybe...

The wife doesn't want me riding this summer but I told her if anything if I find a good deal I can at least grab it and work on her... There's a nice 82 for sale around with 21000km, that needs work. Perhaps it'll be around still when the insurance is all settled. There are so many good parts on the old beast, it would be a shame to send it to the scrapyard...

mwhite who is your insurance company? All the ones I talk to will only give basic coverage due to age of the bike. And get a another bike ASP.

    I'm with Jevco.

The guy driving at the truck is 100% at fault so my rates shouldn't increase hopefully, other than how they go up with inflation... I'm still waiting around for the phone to ring. You have to act fast right? :).

    Marcel,

I have that 81 maxim with about 6800 miles , if your insurance company gives you an option to have them get you a new bike have them call me. I can cash out on a sweet bike and you get a almost new 30 year old ride.

Thinkk about how bad you'd feel if the Bike came-out without a scratch and your boy sustained a traumatic head injury!

Any time you and the rider walk away from getting creamed; somebody in the Main Office was looking-out for you!

    Thank your lucky stars.
    You're only out a bike.

Hey Marcel, just saw this post. Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Glad to hear you are both ok.
You may want to ask around and see if anyone knows a good lawyer. My daughter and I were in an accident about 27 yrs. ago there abouts and after everything was finally settled my daughters money was held until she turned 18.
Anyway, you may be able to sue privately for loss of use, and the difference between what you get from insurance and what the bike is really worth or at least the value of a suitable replacement.
All your work and effort should not go unrewarded.
Also, check with your insurance to see if they offer a "buy back", I believe this is where you get the opportunity to buy the bike back at a reduced price. You know what you have in it and if any parts are salvageable, that'd be the route to go.
Like Rick said, any accident you and your passenger can walk away from is a good thing, but keep an eye on your son, some times these things can take a while to sink in and then he may start to get upset or scared. Did you both get checked out at a hospital?

Sending you both good thoughts, Graham

    Thanks Graham,

i got a call from the insurance guys, they'll give me 2285 (tax in) for hte bike or 2285 - how much the appraiser wants for it, should i want to keep the bike... decisions decisions...

the bikes got some good parts, bacl tire's ok, battery (i think) carbs are clean, etc.... If i get a good deal on second hand 650 i might come out a little ahead...

Hi Marcel, Steve from Las Vegas here, Glad you and your son are unharmed, I looked at the pics, I didn't see enough damage to write it off, was the frame buggered? the forks looked OK, I did see the damage to the head, tank and front fender. Just curious. Good luck to you and yours, Steve in sunny, hot, Las Vegas!

Some places, the adjusters will automatically total a bike if there is evidence of at least three points that touched the ground. That's the way it is here. I have a local friend (listmember but not going to say who it is, since he didn't mention it that I know of) who ended up laying his bike down when someone in a car cut out in front of him.

He's ok, got some roadrash but that's it. The insurance agent came and looked over the bike, and ended up totalling it. I suggested that before they agree to anything let me see what I could see and just give a personal opinion since they said they couldn't see much wrong, themselves.

So, he rode it up here. It was totalled since three parts had contacted the ground.......the engine guard (which he had already straightened back out when he got home), the front turnsignal LENSE had a small crack, and the rear turnsignal TRIM RING had a small rash. THAT WAS ALL I COULD SEE.

We checked the forks, and they weren't tweaked at all, still nice, straight, and parallel.

I had the extra parts for him, and the bike is running beautifully. They decided not to take the claim, since here that would mean a lot of DMV hassles for putting the bike 'back on the road' as well as hassles if they ever were to want to sell.

Oh, yeah..........sorry, 4 points touched the ground--there was a very minor brushburn on the clutch lever ball. A few minutes of careful filing and sandpapering and it would be gone.

    Glad YOU'RE ok.

Hey, one thought----be carefull when looking at Goldwings. The GL1000 and the GL1100 were known for stator issues. If you get one, make sure you CLEAN the yellow wire connectors from the stator into the harness. Otherwise, you're asking for trouble. If you get one with an already-bad stator, it's a MAJOR job to replace. The stator is on the very back of the engine, and the engine MUST be removed in order to replace it. In order to remove the engine, you must disassemble almost the whole bike. I'm in the middle of doing a replacement myself. :)

...also, some of the Wings, not sure of the years had sub frame cracking issues. They were apparently covered under warranty, but only if you found them and fought to get it fixed. I guy I know in St Thomas gets a bunch of work through them and went as far as to make up a hydraulic jig that raiese and tips the whole bike on it's side so that he can do T.I.G. weld repairs.
I think it's the Wings, could be the Venture. Haven't talked to him in about 4 yrs. so the conversation is starting to fade away. It's a bitch getting old!

FIFTY BUCKS!!! do you kanucks get your parts really cheap? The damage I saw in the pics goes way beyond 50CD, the head alone may cost 50 bucks. How did whomever figure that? Pardon the outburst, glad to hear it's not so bad after all.

lalalalalalala, I'm not listening!!! :p Yeah, I got 50 bucks in friggin spark plugs laying around, couldn't believe it when he said that.

I got a cherry of a 650 lined up (fingers crossed), going to see it on Sunday if all goes well. If anything if fix it up, sell whats left and see what happens in the spring. A little scared of the big water-cooled beasts to be honest, that and the extra maintenance.

    No worries Steve,

I just got back from checking out that 650, about 45 minutes from here. It's got good compression, 20,000Km but it's kinda rough... He said he'd sell it for 1100, which I'm mulling over. That seems high for a non runner, but the compression is ok. Side covers are kinda beat up and there are a couple small dents in the tank... It's been sitting for 10 so it needs new rubber, it's like putting on a 10 year old rubber and hoping she don't get pregnant right?

That being said if i took parts off of my wreck (50 special) i could probably get it running again and have a perfectly functional Maxim. Time to put on my mulling/thinking hat :D.

1100 is way too much for a non-runner... I got my '82 650 running for $800, and bikes more expensive here than most places.

1100 for a non runner , tell that dude he is stoned if he thinks he can get that kind of money for it. Offer him $300.00 tops.

Yeah I don't know, it's like he'd rather watch it rot in his garage then sell it at a decent price. I bought my previous ride for 1000, and it was running...

i did the compression test and the carbs were so gummed up that the spring on the carbs couldn't even close the butterflies. Maybe i'm better off waiting till the fall. If i wasn't going to do all the work myself i would say 1300 was robbery. I offered him 900, but no dice... Up here in Canada the price is rediculous for bikes up here, if it's not already clear :(.

I saw yours on kijiji and knew it was yours right off the bat.

I've had a change of heart and will save my cash, part out maxine and hopefully score a good deal on a fall sale. I'll be going bigger, 900-1100 for sure. Heading out east tomorrow for vacation, so i'll at least have time to think about it.

I'm 6' 2" so the 650 is a little cramped, if anything i get something with more of a bench seat as opposed to king-queen. In all honesty I just want to get something (inline 4) at a decent price, a little elbow grease it ok in my book. I agree the 650's are fun bikes, if i lived closer i'd definitely check that Seca.

Started to pull off the broken parts last night, she still runs! The crappy thing though is the carb boots don't fit on the carbs any more, so there is some frame damage somewhere, i'm thinking the motor mounts are all bent forward. The Tank is still holding gas and the head is good, but the cylinder is ground down on the left hand side... other than that and the front end damage (forks tweaked, rim, headlamp/housing/ bars), there is a tonne of good parts to be had... Won't hurt me to wait till fall at any rate.

Know what you mean about waiting till fall mwhite74. I'm kind of waiting for a good fall deal also in a larger bike. But I'm leaning toward a Goldwing. I was looking for a Venture but the top heavy issue bothers me. I'm only 5' 8" and have heard some nasty stories about it. So I think I'd be better off with the Goldwing. The wife needs the security of a couch to sit on. Seen some but mostly too far away or unable to arrange a means of transporting it home.
