Hi All First post here . I have a 82 XJ 1100 J and having rear master cylinder problems . Has anyone retrofitted a later modle master cylinder to the 1100 yet? Seems that finding a OEM replacement is nill to none .
The Xj 1100 has a proportional valve that applies rear and left side front brake pressure when you apply the foot brake . Has anyone redone that so the hand lever applies both front calipers ?
Any way I'm riding on one front brake right now . No Joy .
If anyone can get back to me fairly quick on this, It would be great .
    Thanks !

Chacal is the best thing that's happened to XJ motorcycles since...well...since Yamaha made them.

The easiest route is to rebuild your master cylinder and ride.
You can de-link the brakes but that will require changing master cylinders (front and rear) along with the brake lines. You can easily put 300$ or more into that project.

Click on the XJForever banner at the top right and send a PM to out resident parts supplier Chacal.

Its not releasing the brakes. I have to use the bleed valve on the calipers to free wheel . Its really dirty and it was almost out of fluid .
This is a New bike to me. Prev owner had all the calipers rebuilt and I have reciepts . They release fine when I bleed them .
They do stop the bike But I will have to pull over to release them if I use them alot, as it "pumps up" to almost stopping the bike with no play in the foot brake . I plan to pull the master cyl and calipers off , clean and inspect them and flush out the lines . That may be all it needs . ITS just too hot out side to mess with it right now . I feel its safe enough to ride . Thanks for the link. Good to know we have parts :D

There are 3 things that will cause the brakes to not release.
    1) sticking calipers- probably not this since you have confirmation from the PO that they were rebuilt.
    2) The "spooge hole" inside the master cylinder is clogged. There is a small pin sized hole to bleed pressure from the brake lines inside the MC.
    3) The pedal adjustment rod is adjusted too high and covering the "spooge hole" not letting the brakes release.

I would check to see if there is any freeplay in the rod first. It should 3/8 inch movement in the pedal before the rod makes contact with the MC plunger. If there is the correct freeplay then the MC will need to come apart and be cleaned and rebuilt.
