Okay, I'm just about to finish up my "show" set of carbs. What finish should I be looking to put on the upper and lower carb rack brackets? I can tell that the thottle and choke brackets (and the throttle shaft end arms) are a yellow-green-gold chromate (?) finish, but I can't tell what the rack brackets and the starter/enrichment circuit dowel rod should be. Any help would be mucho appreciato.

Oh, yeah, '82 XJ650 Maxim, Hitachi carbs of course.......

Cadmium plating is so neat (and sooo expensive, to say nothing of the environmental issues), you might want to check into having your parts plated. Or do it yourself, check out Eastwood, they have kits for the DITY guys.

Is cadmium plating the same as yellow chromate?

I don't think so. Yellow chromate (also known as Zinc Chromate or yellow death) is a corrosion preventitive compound that was used extensively prior to the 70s, especially on aircraft.
Cadmium plating is literally that, a thin plating coat of cadmium and some other alloy components.
Both intend to perform the same function through different compounding.
Zinc chromate fell out of favor when the environmental folks got involved.

So cad plating leaves what color finish?

Or, put it another way....what process should I be using on those parts mentioned above (upper/lower rack bars, thottle cable and choke brackets, etc.)

It is more likely that they are yellow CAD. Zinc doesn't last. If you want to have them plated, give International Chromium PLating in Providence, Rhode Island a call. 401-421-0205. Ask for Jean. Awesome Work!

An irridecent golden color that is just cool. If you have purchased new hardware screws, you've seen it.

Be forwarned; cad (cadmium) plating is extremely toxic in the application stages. Zinc chromate is a known carcinogen. Plating is best left to pros who can guard against this. Just my opinion......
