    Oh dear....

My baby decided she wouldn't hang on tonight as I was crossing a road. It was almost as if she couldn't make up her mind... Sliding one minute and grabbing the next, only to flip over and buck me like a bronco on to the asphalt.

    Damage:
    Broken and bent front indicator,
    Broken and bent clutch lever,
    broken (but still working) dash
Gravel rash on front axel, bar end, footpeg, both stands, muffler, grab rail, rear indicator and a couple of other places... Mostly small stuff though.

I got a sore wrist, shoulder and back... all of which will come right :)

    Morale of the story:
Have respect for the power of your motorcycle and BE CAREFUL!

Yet another lesson learnt the hard way.. But hey, could have been a whole lot worse ;)

Oh no, man - not that.

That´s sad to hear, Alive - and so soon after you got her in such beutiful shape..

    - But; main things is no seriuos physical injury happened to you (you first, the bike next).

That being said, I hope the damages to the bike are "only" cosmetically and can be fixed, eventually..

Best of luck to you and the bike - stay healthy and ride safe..

Sorry to hear of your injuries, I'm very glad you came out alright. Get back on the horse and get her fixed up. Day older, day wiser I guess. Kind of a shame after all of your hard work.

Man, you sound like you have my luck. Everytime I get something new, or something I always wanted, there seems to be a danger zone of one day to one month where it either gets 1) lost 2) stolen 3) broken. I hope your bike gets back to looking as good as it did. Reminds me of the one I had, looked brand new!

I'm still wondering how the hell it happened :?: It just happened so fast.

Good new is that it is pretty much all cosmetic damage (haven't looked at her in the light of day yet) and can all be repaired. Unfortunately there will still be a couple of tell tale signs but they will be hard to see ;)

I might need to go see a doc though :(

Really, really sorry to hear about the incident. Hope you're well. That's certainly the important part. If you need to see a doctor, do it. Undiagnosed injuries can turn out to have life long affects.

    Best,

I meant to add, look out for a bald old pom driving a hired motorhome around your area. My brother is staying with his daughter in Weymouth for a few weeks.

Seems she held up pretty good Alive... Notice how fitting yout name is now?
I digress... It's testament to your mechanical skills that nothing tried to jump off.
The bike is still rideable then? Or am i missing something from the pics?

Heal your injuries and hop back on bud - the streets will be lonely without that piece of artwork (the bike ).

The Bar End, Mirror and Signal Light sacrificed themselves for the greater good.

That bit of rash on the Foot Peg and Side Cover can be sent away with some determination and elbow grease. The steel parts, too ... but, not with the ease that the aluminum cam be worked.

Why do the powers test us AFTER we do a whole restore. Had the same thing happen to my 900 after finishing it up and ... "just going for a little spin."
A squirrel darted-out and took-out my front wheel friction when he squished.
Boom. The low-side happened and my Bar End Sliders, Case Savers and Left Rear Silencer paid the price. The Shoei Helmet I was wearing bounced a few times but didn't fail me.

Bike still rides... A little rich, but it was like that before I put her on her side.

I am extremely happy that none of the plastic or paint was damaged... Just waiting for the bike shop to get back to me with prices for replacement parts.... I'm going to guess about $350NZD ... God I hope it's less.

Hope you're feelin better and hope you get that bike back out again soon!

Damn. That you are OK is all that really matters.

These things only happen just after you get it all shiny, my bike ain't shiny, my car ain't shiny,... (I ain't shiny)... you can see where this is going ;)

Might be old bikes but the prices are new (if you get what I mean). At least you can get most parts I guess.

Did you slide in the wet or...?

Slid on the mud on my back tyre. Worst thing is I knew it was there and had just remindedmyself to be careful....

    Everything happens for a reason.

Hey you going on the Brass Monkey?

Sorry to see you and the bike go down Alive. Accidents just plain suck and I hate to see when they happen to anybody. I got into a bad one when I was in my late teen's with a Honda MT250 enduro...lost the bike and 4 teeth along with a broken finger and some bad bruises. Cost me a chunk of money to fix myself up but the bike was junk and sold for parts. Rock quarries can be a dangerous place to have a little fun in! Hope the Doctor has good news for you anyway and I'm sure you'll get the bike looking spiffy again in due time.

Hardest fall I ever had (when I was a kid, not on the XJ) was when I was riding my dirt bike on a hard packed clay trail. It had rained a few days before. There was just a bit of that greasy mud where there had been a puddle. I was riding straight, didn't even give it any thought. Went down like a giant hand slapped me to the ground.

Mud  , I live in the country and mud 'n stuff is a constant hazard, so is the occasional cow. Funny thing is i used to blast around (many years ago) on dirt bikes (full knobbys) and never think twice bout road conditions. 25 years later i am a lot more aware 8O !

Bumps and bruises remind one that they are Alive ;)

Don't know yet, still looking for a place to live, rentals are hard to find when you have a land shark. All depends if I have the $ and if it is my week with the kids (shared custody).

Good reminder for myself also with my new XJ! I have a dual sport that I tool around on the road and whereabouts with knobbies and have to remind myself that I have tires like Alive's on my XJ. Just the other day, before this thread, I put the FJ into a skid coming off the end of my driveway. I don't have a garage built yet and I ride to the back to put the bikes up under the house in a tall walk-in crawlspace. I come in fast with my dirt bike off the drive on to the grass most of the time. I came in slow with the XJ but it wasn't slow enough with the spring grass and a slight down-grade...gave me a little "oh shit" moment as I headed for a tree. Good to see the Doctor had good news for you Alive.

    :)
Well this was in the late 80s I had he Duel Sport, called them Duel Purpose then. It was a '86 Suzi TS250X RH, 2 stroke water cooled (Think RM with lights). Natural feet up slider, sliding round corners speedway style (unsealed) and a bat outta hell on the straights...she'd do 100 MHP on gravel or grass, damn quick. NO 4 stroke trail bike could touch it, nailed a few road bikes too.

So now I ride slow on unsealed roads, 5 MPH on grass and look out for pea gravel, slight bumps etc on sealed roads :? instead of sliding round corners speedway style and a bat outta hell on the straights 8O

Must be gettin old. More grey hair then black. Not going bald though, bonus!

Good to know as I am getting old too but have a young guy inside me at times. 2 stroker on the road...awsome...want one! I am getting grey too but still have my hair...most defo a bonus if I stay alive...all lessons to learn from and getting old may just keep me kicking to ride another day. Besides...my XJ is too pretty to waste it out on the road being a hot dog and putting it to limits that is just is not worth the thrill. I have a wife and 2 kids now that need me! Thanks for the good tips Kiwi...It's been a long time since I've had a straight road bike.

I'm sure you know this......but, next time (let's hope there IS no next time) you can avoid the "high side" bucking bronco effect" by pulling in the clutch as you brake.....and leaving it pulled in until you come to a complete stop. But you knew that.....right?

No I didn't know that, but it happened so fast that unless instinct took over and I did it naturally,it just wouldn't happen (I just had to kinda go with the flow)

I'll try and bear that in mind just in case there's a next time ;)

About 15 days ago, I took a little spill around a reverse-banked, 90* left, blind turn. I came around the corner to the sight of gravel across more than half the lane. Well I was on the bad half of the corner and the rear started to slide, then the front went out too. Bike went down and I slid down the road about 20 ft. Bounced up, picked up the bike and assessed the damage. Nothing mechanical. Just very similar damage to yours Alive. I took the gauge bezel off and sanded it down to de-burr it and filled it with body putty. Then sanded it smooth and repainted it flat black. Looks fine now. Bike is back in duty. Glad I wear full riding gear as I got a small hole in the jacket on the forearm, but armor stopped it from going to my arm. I got a small brush burn from the inside of the jacket rubbing my arm, but that was it....oh and a lot of gravel in my pants which was rather...um...uncomfortable. But I finished the 300 mile ride.

live and learn...and be grateful for riding armor.

    glad you are alright.
