Checking through things here, coil resistance is 2.8 and 3.0 ohms. I think they are original coils. Did the high tension wire test between the two wires that go to the plugs belonging to that coil 24.65kohms and 18.2 k ohms. Is that too high? I did these tests when bike was warmed up.

Tci voltage is 10.8v on red/white wire.

Ohm tests at tci connector between black to orange is 136 ohms
And between black and grey is 140 ohms. Bike hot

Red/white and grey wire at tci is 3.6 ohms
And red/white wire and orange wire is 3.8 ohms. Bike hot here also

I have cleaned and dielectric greased every connector except to the taillights and signal lights. Changed fuse holder under seat. Bike starts ok, runs ok usually until a few blocks down the road depending on ambient temp. If its hotter, it wants to die or will near idle. And usually won't fire back up til cooled off again.
I noticed today reading in the forums about how these bikes can't use a BPR7ES but can use a BP7ES

My bike has BR7ES plugs in it which I assume are resistive as well. Goin to get new plugs.

I have posted on here how I think the TCI on this bike is not for this bike. Can anyone help on that? The code on reluctor and TCI do not match.

Perhaps post your location? Another member may be able to assist with a TCI swap or at least identification?

So when the bike quits you have spark or no spark?

This. And if it looses spark, does it on all cylinders?

The most likely heat related item that would be the culprit are the inductive pick ups on the crank, but there are 2 that trigger 2 cylinders each and it would be unlikely that both fail at the same temperature.

10ish volts is a bit low, have you gone over the connections yet?

What voltage is it at the TCI when it runs?

It still fires, and may run, but I have to give it full throttle sometimes for it to even get 1000 rpm. Carbs have been cleaned, not synced yet. I know... Golden rule. Thing is, it seems to run good until it gets good n hot.
It's power may be lacking somewhat. I drove a 82 750 maxim. It had a fair bit more power. This one being a 85 700 I would have thought it would be similar.

Well since no-one else is giving you any specs for your tests, below are what the 550 should be. If yours are different a Wizard will have to correct me but you do seem to have a few issues based on your numbers.

XJ550 coil primary is 2.5 ohms +/- 10% at 68 F. Coils on my 550 will test a little bit higher when the temp is higher and have been at 2.9ohms and functioned just fine (which is just out of spec).

Secondary is 11,000 ohms +/- 20% at 68 F. If your specs are the same then you have too much resistance. Did you remove the resistor caps when doing the test and only test off your plug wires? Also the fact that your numbers are rather different isn't good.

Have you checked your running voltage? Should be over 14V when engine is above 3k, if not your going to be doing some work on your bikes electrical plant.

I am having some problems with my 82 650 too. Maybe I can get some advice here. I did an overhaul on my bike and when I put the motor back in I switched the 4 wire plug that goes into my tci with the relay just below the rectifier and tci on the left side of my bike. Now I get no spark. The only way I have seen any spark is when I turn on and off the run switch. It sparks in 1&4 once when the switch is flicked. I was wondering if I destroyed the when I switched the plugs. Any help would be much appreciated.

Bump. I think I may be running into the same issue as the guy above me. 1 and 4 are firing and 2&3 will not after doing the same thing on my xj650
